Crowds and vendors were numerous early Saturday morning during the annual Downtown Garage Sale. Bargains were found, and lots of merchandise was sold. Special thanks to all the vendors for cleaning up their areas. Next year's sale will be held on the first Saturday in May.

Winn Relay for Life Raises $30,640.88

Winn Parish Relay for Life raised $30,640.88 since the February kickoff. Between 400-500 people attended the event “Under The Big Top” Friday at the WSHS Football Field to enjoy food and games while raising money for cancer research. “Our goal is $35,000 for this year, and we hope to make it,” said Rita James. The Relay for Life fundraiser ends Aug. 31, 2016.

4H Commodity Ambassador Contests Name State Winners

4-H’ers from across the state competed in the 2016 State 4-H Commodity Ambassador contests on April 19 on the LSU campus. Students from grades four through 12 participated in the chicken, egg, seafood, sugar and turkey ambassador contests, and 15 winners were chosen.

Downtown Garage Sale May 7

The 2016 Downtown Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, May 7, beginning at 7AM. Spaces for set up are located Downtown in the large parking area between The Pea Patch and the Post Office. Some Downtown merchants will be set up in front of businesses.

Jury Amends Personnel Manual

The Winn Parish Police Jury met Monday, April 18 for a regular meeting. The Jury adopted a resolution to amend the personnel manual to allow the secretary/ treasurer position to terminate employees at their discretion, a move surrounding parishes are also making. The proposal simply gives the position the authority to hire and fire employees, the process of firing will remain as it is stated in the manual.

Winnfield Resident Sentenced To 70 Months In Prison For Failure To Register As Sex Offender

ALEXANDRIA, La. (U.S. Attorney's Office, Western District of La.) – United States Attorney Stephanie A. Finley announced that a Winnfield resident was sentenced last week to 70 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender after moving to Louisiana from Michigan. Dexter Lavar Powell, 38, of Winnfield, La., was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell on one count of failure to register as a sex offender. Powell was also sentenced to five years of supervised release.

Two Arrested For Simple Arson

Winn Parish Sheriff ’s deputies arrested two men Wednesday, April 13 in connection with the arson of two abandoned structures Friday, April 8. Deputies working the theft of an ATV off Hwy. 84 apprehended a suspect whose clothes smelled like a burnt house, according to Sheriff Cranford Jordan. Through this man, suspects were developed regarding the fire.
