Winn Students Train For Workforce

Students in Winn Parish gota first-hand look at the workings of local businesses this summer through the Winn Parish Jump Start Summer Career Education Initiative. Jump Start, which was held from June 12 through June 30, saw thirty-three Winn students receive work place skills and academic credit through an extensive three-week course.The course was divided in to two sections, with the first two weeks dedicated to training students and allowing them to earn Industry Based Credentials in the following fields:

With Deadline Approaching, Mayor And City Council Reach Agreement On Budget

A special called meeting of the Winnfield City Council was held on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at the Allen Building. With a standing room only crowd in attendance, Mayor Kiah Beville called the meeting to order. Councilmembers in attendance were Councilmember Matt Miller, Councilmember Sarah Junkin and Councilmember Cheryl Demery. Conspicuously absent from the meeting were Councilmembers Gerald Hamms and Jessie Edwards.

2nd Annual Dugdemona Fest, This Saturday!

Independence Day celebrations may have passed, but the celebrating never really ends in Louisiana. Our state isn’t called The Festival Capital of America without reason. The Dugdemona Summer Festival is one of over 400 different festivals held in Louisiana each year. Winnfield’s newest festival is celebrating its second year on Saturday, July 8, 2017. As a special ‘tip of the hat’ to our festival, Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser will be attending his first ever Dugdemona Summer Festival. Several of the Dug’ board members and Chamber of Commerce and Tourism members had the opportunity to meet Mr. Nungesser a few months ago, and sparked his interest with talk about the festival.

Georgetown Woman Pleads Guilty To Counterfeit Charges

The United States Department of Justice issued the following press release on June 20, 2017 regarding the arrest of Gena Armstrong from Georgetown. The story is not only of interest because of the close proximity to Winn Parish, but also because our own parish has been dealing with the issue of counterfeit bills in the past several months.

“Acting U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced that a Georgetown woman pleaded guilty last week to making fake U.S. $20 bills.

Winn Councilmembers Address Stalemate

After the June 13, 2017 regular Winnfield City Council Meeting, Mayor Beville issued a statement to the public. His statement was published in the June 21, 2017 edition of the Winn Parish Enterprise. Since that time, Councilmembers have issued statements to the public as follows:

“This is in response to the town of Winnfield budget situation. Every citizen is relevant. Every tax dollar matters. It is the duty of all elected officials to use taxpayers dollars as wise and efficient as possible.

Ms. Bailor Brown

At only 13-years old, Ms. Bailor Brown, of Dodson, is a name familiar to many Winn Parish residents. Ms. Brown is an amateur trick rider and has participated in local parades and local riding events, as well as events outside ourarea. This weekend Bailor will be working under Rockin J Rodeo Company and will be riding in the Peach Festival Rodeo at the Ruston Expo Center at 8:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend and support our local talent!
