BATON ROUGE, LA. –First Lady Donna Edwards and Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Dr. Chuck Carr Brown proudly unveiled Louisiana’s first anti-litter slogan amongst throngs of environmental enthusiasts gathered for the Keep Louisiana Beautiful annual state conference on September 29th at the Galvez Conference Center. After unveiling the slogan at the conference, Mrs. Edwards and Dr. Carr Brown appeared outside and carefully placed a bumper sticker on an awaiting state vehicle, the first of approximately 12,000 state vehicles that will proudly bear the message on their bumpers this fall. The winning slogan was selected after a summerlong contest, which challenged ad agencies across the state to create a catchy and positive anti-litter slogan and bumper sticker design that would convey the message about keeping our state clean, beautiful and litter-free. 

The Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame will welcome a very special exhibit and speaker on October 18th. At 2:30 and 7:00 p.m. Captain Richard Moran, the curator and director of the Louisiana Maneuvers Museum at Camp Beauregard, will be discussing the vital role that Winn Parish and its residents played in World War II. This year is the 75th anniversary of the Great Louisiana Maneuvers and our museum has been busy preparing for this event. The new exhibit is only here for a short time, so visitors will have limited opportunities to view the artifacts and memorabilia on display. John Holland will be playing music from that era and light refreshments will be served. 

The Winn Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with The City of Winnfield and The First Methodist Church would like to invite you to join us down town for our fourth annual “Fall Festival” on Monday, October 31, 2016,  from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. (No scary costumes please.)

According to recent information released by the Federal Highway Administration, Louisiana drivers are nearly 12 percent more likely to be involved in a deer crash than they were last year. Because our parish is heavily wooded, Winn Parish drivers have a higher than 1 in 300 chance of being involved in a deer crash. It’s important to also remember that in 2013 there were 191 deaths that resulted from animal crashes, with deer being the most often struck. The months a driver is most likely to collide with a deer in Winn Parish, mostly due to mating season, are: November, December and January.  

The Winnfield Tigers hosted the Jena Giants, on their home turf on Friday, and worked hard to redeem themselves after an ugly loss to the Peabody Warhorses. Winnfield came into the game with a 2-2 record, while Jena brought a record of 3-1, with their only loss being by three points, to Tioga. Jena was a formidable opponent, having scored a total of 160 points in only four ballgames.

On Friday night, the Winnfield Tigers and their fans traveled to Alexandria, only to come with a disappointing loss to the Peabody Warhorses. The Tigers were able to put 14 points on the board during the first quarter, while holding the Warhorses to only 7 points. Then the second quarter had Peabody putting 15 unanswered points on the board. After halftime, the Tigers came back with 8 more points, to the Warhorses’ 7, but were unable to score in the fourth quarter, while their opponents added 6 more points. When I asked Coach Pyles about his thoughts on the game, he said, “I thought we were ready to play, but we just didn’t play very well. We had some guys missing, and that hurt us some.” He added, “In spurts we played well, but turnovers hurt us again this week. In the past we’ve been able to over come them, but we just didn’t do it on Friday.

The Winnfield Rotary Club met on August 31st and hosted some very special guests. After the meeting was called to order and the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance were said, the guests were welcomed and a thank you note from Harley Austin was shared with the group. She especially wanted to thank the club for sponsoring her trip to Louisiana Girl’s State. Pastor Joel Hines was recognized for his contributions to the previous Rotary meeting, and a presentation was made to him.

Earlier this month, some members of the Jordan Hill United Pentecostal Church joined more than 300 volunteers from other churches and church associations to accomplish a feat that must have seemed insurmountable. The volunteers joined with others from the Hornbeck community, all around Louisiana, and neighboring states, and converged on the tiny community of Hornbeck, Louisiana, with a common goal in mind…to build a church in a day. After a very special prayer at the building site, work began at 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning, September 2. Church In A Day, or CIAD, assists congregations within the United Pentecostal Church, in building new church buildings, all in a single day. With CIAD, a church receives the equivalent of a $100,000 to $250,000 donation, and most importantly goes from an empty lot to a service-ready sanctuary. Before a church is constructed, certain criteria must be met. A local assembly must have land and the means for putting in a foundation.

Perhaps you have seen a familiar face around Winnfield, but not known exactly who it was. You may have seen him at the police department, or the hospital. You may have even seen him at one of the nursing homes or schools. The smiling, friendly face you see is Thomas Kirkendoll. Mr. Kirkendoll and his wife Mary are active volunteers in our community and believe that is what God has called them to do in Winnfield. Mrs.

Many local residents have been asking about the progress of bridge work on US Hwy. 84. According to the latest update received by Sheriff Cranford Jordan, the bridge may be complete and open for traffic on December 1.
