Senator Bill Cassidy Visits Winnfield

Parish Senator Bill Cassidy held a town hall meeting August 31stat the Winn Parish Library from 11-12pm. Over forty parish residents were in attendance including local business and government representatives as well as a group representing the Atlanta Future Business Leaders of America(FBLA).

Purchase Your Hunting Gear Tax Free

Act 453 of the 2009 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature enacted the “Annual Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend Holiday Act” that provides an exemption from state and local sales and use taxes on individuals’ purchases of firearms, ammunition and hunting supplies on the first Friday through Sunday each September. This holiday is meant to encourage participation in the upcoming hunting season, and enables sportsmen to purchase guns, ammunition, and other hunting supplies tax-free. Purchases Eligible for Exemption .

Timber Theft Arrests Made

Following a six-month investigation, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) enforcement agents arrested two men on multiple felony charges. Tommy Morgan, 68, of Natchitoches, and Kevin Wayne Hill, 49, of Coushatta were charged in Rapides, Jackson and Ouachita parishes with defrauding three timber companies of $953,990.21. “Louisiana has some of the strongest timber-theft laws on the books which aid in the investigations and arrests by our highly skilled LDAF enforcement agents,” Strain said..

Rotarians Honor Law Enforcement

Rotarians met on August 24th and took time from their day to honor local law enforcement. After the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, member Ted Wold introduced the law enforcement officers that were present. Police Chief Johnny Ray Carpenter represented the City Police Department and Deputies Rick Tucker and Wayne Smith represented the Sheriff’s Department, as Sheriff Cranford Jordan was out of town, and Marshal Sidney Walton could not attend due to his being hospitalized.

Tigers Bring Home a Win

On Friday night, the Winnfield Senior High School Tigers took on Loyola Prep for their first game of the season. The contest was in the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center High School Jamboree, and was only two quarters long, but the Tigers showed their skills. The Tigers brought home a 6 – 0 win. The Louisiana rain has kept the team from practicing the way Coach Pyles would have liked, but he said he felt the Tigers accomplished all they needed to on the field.

Police Jury Discusses Projects

The Winn Parish Police Jury met on Aug. 15 and held their regular meeting. The meeting was called to order and the prayer and Pledge of Allegiance were said. An amendment was made to the agenda before it was adopted. And, the minutes  from the July 18th regular meeting and July 19th special called meeting were adopted.

Safety Committee and Special City Council Meetings Held

On August 17, the Public Safety Committee and Winnfield City Council met to address one item. With the resignation of two officers of the Winnfield Police Department, the department is short of staff. Chief Carpenter was seeking approval of the Public Safety Committee to place an officer who is currently part time, on provisional full time status. After discussion, the committee approved his request and the meeting was adjourned.

With 30 Louisiana parishes declared Federal Disaster Areas, 13 confirmed deaths, an estimated 40,000 homeless, without transportation, and jobless, and floodwaters still rising, significant impact has been felt across south Louisiana. According to Brad Keiserman, vice president for disaster services and operations and logistics for the Red Cross, “The current flooding in Louisiana is the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Superstorm Sandy. The Red Cross is mounting a massive relief operation, which we anticipate will cost at least $30 million and that number may grow as we learn more about the scope and magnitude of the devastation.”

Political Museum Hosts Talk and Book Signing

The Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame will host a talk and book signing by author Jack McGuire. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 3 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Mr. McGuire is a board member of the LPMHOF and will be speaking on Earl K. Long’s 1960 8th District Congressional campaign, which is the subject of his newly published book. The book is titled Win the Race or Die Trying: Uncle Earl’s Last Hurrah. Mr. McGuire also co-authored Louisiana Governors: Rulers, Rascals, and Reformers, and his work has appeared in Louisiana History.

Long Leaves a Legacy

Many in Winn Parish and the State of Louisiana are mourning the loss of Jimmy Dale Long, Sr. Mr. Long passed away on August 9, following a motor vehicle accident. Born in Winnfield, on October 6, 1931, Long attended Winnfield schools and graduated from Winnfield High School, then attended Northwestern State University. Long majored in government, then went on to make a living as a grocery store owner and cattle farmer. From 1948 to 1955, he served in the U.S. Navy.
