Back in June, the Winnfield Kiwanis Club felt Sheriff Cranford Jordan should be recognized for his many accomplishments since beginning his law enforcement career in 1973. To highlight Cranford’s steadfast and faithful work in our parish, our local Kiwanis Club submitted a rather detailed summary of his work. The first year after becoming a deputy sheriff in Winn Parish, Cranford was named Outstanding Young Law Enforcement Officer for the parish, and finished first in the 39th session of the basic law enforcement academy at LSU in Baton Rouge. In 1979 he was appointed as Chief of Police for the City of Winnfield, where he served for 14 years. In 1993 Cranford was recognized by the Mayor and City Council as an Outstanding Citizen of Winnfield, after saving the life of a newborn by performing CPR. During his time as Chief, he was instrumental in establishing the Winn Parish Communications District. He continues to serve on the board and is currently the Chairman.

Saturday, September 24th has been named Fall Clean‐Up Day by the City of Winnfield, and we need your help! The city invites everyone to come out and help improve the appearance of our hometown. You can form a Clean Team to help make the city beautiful, or you can register as an individual and be placed on a team.

On August 31st the Winn Parish Police Jury held a special called meeting in the meeting room of the parish courthouse. Present for the meeting were Mr. Allen Michael McCartney, Mr. Josh McAllister, Mrs. Deionne Carpenter, Mr. Don Leach, Mr. Phillip Evans, and Mr. Mike Carpenter. The only jury member not present was Mr. Author Robinson.

If you see an odd looking purple box, hanging in a tree around our parish, rest assured, it belongs there. The boxes are three sided and about two feet tall, and resemble a box kite. What you are actually seeing is a trap for the emerald ash borer. The traps are coated with a sticky lure scent and are closely monitored for presence of the destructive insect. Traps are placed along high-risk areas and should not be tampered with or removed, if you happen upon one.

Parish Senator Bill Cassidy held a town hall meeting August 31stat the Winn Parish Library from 11-12pm. Over forty parish residents were in attendance including local business and government representatives as well as a group representing the Atlanta Future Business Leaders of America(FBLA).

Act 453 of the 2009 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature enacted the “Annual Louisiana Second Amendment Weekend Holiday Act” that provides an exemption from state and local sales and use taxes on individuals’ purchases of firearms, ammunition and hunting supplies on the first Friday through Sunday each September. This holiday is meant to encourage participation in the upcoming hunting season, and enables sportsmen to purchase guns, ammunition, and other hunting supplies tax-free. Purchases Eligible for Exemption .

Following a six-month investigation, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) enforcement agents arrested two men on multiple felony charges. Tommy Morgan, 68, of Natchitoches, and Kevin Wayne Hill, 49, of Coushatta were charged in Rapides, Jackson and Ouachita parishes with defrauding three timber companies of $953,990.21. “Louisiana has some of the strongest timber-theft laws on the books which aid in the investigations and arrests by our highly skilled LDAF enforcement agents,” Strain said..

Rotarians met on August 24th and took time from their day to honor local law enforcement. After the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, member Ted Wold introduced the law enforcement officers that were present. Police Chief Johnny Ray Carpenter represented the City Police Department and Deputies Rick Tucker and Wayne Smith represented the Sheriff’s Department, as Sheriff Cranford Jordan was out of town, and Marshal Sidney Walton could not attend due to his being hospitalized.
