Kelley announces retirement after 32 years as Clerk

Max Kelley was serving as the mayor of Winnfield.

Obscenity ordinance introduced by Council

The April 14 meeting of the Winnfield City Council was a standard affair, highlighted by the inclusion of three ordinances. There was no guest or audience participation, so the council proceeded to the agenda fairly quickly. District 4 Councilman Matt Miller moved to add a new business non-action item to the agenda under the guise of “Cleanest City Competition.”

Rotary hosts sporting clay competition

The Rotary Club of Winnfield hosted a sporting clay competition April 11 at the Natchitoches Shooting Range. This was the second annual competition, a fund-raiser to help support club projects including scholarships, school uniforms, dictionaries, adult literacy, youth ball team and more. Bank of Winnfield hosted Winn's 5-man team Saturday, including Jim Colvin, Buddy Heard, Steve Adams, Delane Adams and Don Causey. Other Winnfield Rotarians assisting included event coordinator Brian Brewton, District Governor Bob Holeman, president Rusty Russell, chef Bo Walker, secretary Jay Hinckley and advisor Joe Evans.

Claude Hendrickson, an engineer from Austin, TX, flew into the David G. Joyce Airport in Winnfield in a World War II-era bomber plane.

Louisiana Forest Festival

Downtown Winnfield was shut down on Saturday to celebrate the return of an old staple of the Louisiana Forest Festival: the bed races. A team of racers jolted from Winnfield City Hall to the site of the old Winnfield Hotel, hoping to edge out the competition. The Family JewelBox emerged victorious, winning first place in the race and taking home the prize for funniest bed, which was named “Bed of Roses.”

Bratton apprehended, booked into Winn Parish Jail

The nine-day manhunt for a burglary suspect came to a close last Thursday as 34-year old Kenneth “Kenny” Bratton was ooked into the Winn Parish Jail following his capture by Jackson Parish Sheriff’s deputies. He was covered with mosquito bites and days of running had caused his ankles to swell.
