Mrs. Jane Purser Honored At March 2018 Rotary Meeting

On March 7, 2018, the Winn Rotary Club held their regular noontime meeting at Lynda’s Country Kitchen, with Brother Michael Brakefield as the special guest. Brakefield, the pastor of Hope Chapel in Jonesboro, spoke to the group that gathered over lunch, about his own time spend homeless and incarcerated, and about the passion he has to address homelessness in our own community.

He then discussed plans for the Kisatchie House of Hope shelter that will be opening in Winnfield. He also invited those in attendance to join with Brother Jared Little at First United Methodist Church for an informational banquet about the planned Kisatchie House of Hope.

Walker Family Participates in 2018 Ride AtaxiaDallas

On March 24,2018 Kate Walker, along with her parents, Jason and Rachel and about another forty plus people that formed “KATE’S KREWE” participated in the 2018 RIDE ATAXIA-DALLAS in Denton, Texas. There were over three hundred cyclists participating in the event.

Ride Ataxia has three courses for riders, 6 mile, 25 mile and 50 mile rides and is used as a method to raise funds for research by the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance in search of a cure for Friedreich’s Ataxia, a rare genetic, degenerative, lifeshortening nuero-muscular disorder that afflicts about 15,000 people worldwide and 5,000 people in the United States.

17Year Old And Juvenile Arrested, Charged With Two Local Burglaries

The Winnfield Police Department issued the following News Release on Friday, March 29, 2018.

On March 28, 2018, Winnfield Police Officers responded to a burglar alarm at Mac’s Fresh Market, located at 1111 West Court Street in Winnfield. When officers arrived, they saw someone inside the store, and Winnfield Police Officers and Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheriffs quickly surrounded the building to prevent the escape of the suspects. After a search of the building, Cody Dunlap (DOB 04/17/2000) of 1003 East Elm Street in Winnfield and a 16-year old juvenile were found inside the store and arrested.

NSU Addiction Studies Program Ranked No. 6

Northwestern State University was recently ranked number 6 in the nation for quality and affordability for their online bachelor’s program in addiction studies. The two higher education websites that published the ranking are guidetoonlineschools.com and online.org.

Addiction studies graduates typically work as addiction counselors, and the bachelor’s degree program offers an understanding of the human mind, addictive behaviors, and advances in addiction counseling.

“We are glad to see our program receive national recognition for both quality and affordability,” said Associate Professor of Psychology Joseph Biscoe, who is director of the Louisiana Addiction Technology Transfer Center.

Winn Parish Voters Support Continued Funding for Parish Health Unit, Library and Road Districts, Winnfield Mayor’s Election and District 1 Becomes Runoffs

Primary elections were held on Saturday, March 24, 2018, and results have Winn Parish residents expecting to see some changes in local government.

Four candidates ran for the City of Winnfield Mayor’s office, and residents can now mark their calendars to vote in two runoff elections on April 28, 2018.

In the runoff for the Winnfield Mayoral Office are Democrat Jessie “Mr. Jessie” Edwards, who garnered 28.35% of the votes, and George Moss, with no party affiliation, who gained 47.30% of the votes. Votes for Manual Espejel and Jeffery Hamilton, Sr. were split almost equally with them receiving 12.5% and 11.85% of the votes, respectively.

La. Forest Festival Seeking Parade and Other Entries

The Louisiana Forest Festival will kick off on Friday, April 20, 2018 with a 6:00 p.m. parade in downtown Winnfield, and you can become a part of the fun!

La. Forest Festival organizers are searching for floats, queens, atvs, and other participants to join in the parade excitement. Entry into the parade is free and everyone is invited to participate.

CHS FFA Special Guests of Rotary Club

On January 24, 2018 the Winnfield Rotary club was excited to host Mr. Chad Camp, Calvin High School Agriculture teacher and FFA Sponsor. Joining Mr. Camp were four of his students and FFA competitors: Anthony Adams, Treyton Trawick, Josie Camp, and Emma Bevill.

The club members had been invited to speak about their trip to Indianapolis, Indiana in October, where they represented the State FFA Organization in the Forestry Competition, and won 4th place in the nation.

Voters to Elect Mayor, 3 Councilmembers, and Vote On 5 Millage Renewals

As Winn Parish voters head to the polls this Saturday, March 23, 2018, it is important to be prepared for casting votes. Voters are reminded to bring a current form of identification, and are also reminded that campaigning cannot occur within 600 feet of a polling place.

Voters living inside the City of Winnfield will elect a new Mayor to replace outgoing Mayor Kiah Bevill. The mayoral candidates include Democrat Jessie “Mr. Jessie” Edwards, Manuel Espejel with no party affiliation, Democrat Jeffery Hamilton, Sr., and George Moss with no party affiliation.

Residents of City Council District 1 will elect a Councilmember from the following field of candidates: Incumbent Democrat Cheryl Demery, Kenneth Dudley with no party affiliation, LaWanda
Holden with no party affiliation, and Democrat Lethia “Ann” Pinkney.
