LDEQ holds ribbon cutting for new Courthouse parking lot

Representatives from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality were in Winnfield last week for an official ribbon cutting of the new Courthouse parking lot.
The new parking lot across from the Winn Parish Courthouse had an official ribbon-cutting last week, where various representatives from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and local government were in attendance. The parking lot, which has been available for use since Sept., is the first of its kind in the state of Louisiana. Made of a special material called pervious concrete, its purpose is to eliminate storm water runoff and to provide storm water pollution prevention.

Jan. 1 began a new term for elected offices in Winn Parish and across the state, with several newly elected officials joining even more incumbents for this term. The highest-ranked of those elected are two new members of Congress, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy and U.S. Representative Dr. Ralph Abraham. They took their oaths of office on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the U.S. Senate.

Winn Parish retail sales up in 2014

Retail sales in Winn Parish have seen a slight uptick through November of this year, and the parish will almost certainly see an increase in sales from 2013. Sales tax numbers released by the Winn Parish School Board show that the 2% sales tax collected by the board in the first 11 months of this year totals $3,584,698.05, which equals sales tax revenue of $179,234,902.50
