Murder suspect captured in Winnfield

A Campti man wanted by the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff ’s Office for First Degree Murder in connection with the attempted robbery and shooting of Allen Darrel Halford of Colfax has been captured in Winnfield according to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff ’s Office. Saturday morning, Winnfield Police assisted by the Winn Parish Sheriff ’s Office captured A L Simmons II, 20, of Campti while hiding on the roof of an apartment in Winnfield.

Master Gardener Classes Set

Calling all home gardeners, vegetable producers, and any others with a green thumb: the Winn Parish Extension Office is preparing for a Master Gardener Program to begin on July 6, 2020. Price Becomes Fourth Generation LFDA President

Waylon Bryan Price was elected President of the Louisiana Funeral Directors Association (LFDA) by his colleagues from across the state at their annual general session on June 2. Price, a licensed funeral director at Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield, is a native of Winnfield and a graduate of Winnfield Senior High School. Being 4th generation funeral director, he follows in the footsteps of three generations of his family in funeral service.

Congratulations to the following two students from Winnfield Middle School who each won a bicycle at the 2020 D.A.R.E. Fair on Saturday, June 6, in the parking lot of the Huey P. On Thursday, May 28, 2020, three Winn Parish deputies graduated from the North Delta Police Training Academy: Alec Edwards, Jessica McDaniel, and John Walker. Their families were unable to attend the ceremony because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Kisatchie Recreation Sites Updates for Winn and Natchitoches

The Kisatchie National Forest welcomes guests as they return to enjoy the great outdoors. Please note that some restroom facilities remain shutdown. Also, some sites charge a small usage fee; call ahead to find out if this fee is applicable to each specific location. In addition, reservations are not required for campgrounds; they are first come, first served – except for Beaver Dam Campground on the Caney Ranger District. Lastly, motorized trail status changes with weather conditions. Please call the OHV Trail Status Hotline for updates at (866) 830-6467. The Winn Ranger District of the Kisatchie National Forest announces the following reopenings and closures, effective June 5, 2020:

Shut Down:

• Cloud Crossing Campground – no date yet on reopening
