The Winnfield Police Department are investigating the homicide of Antheus Johnson, 28, of Winnfield on Aug. 20.

Johnson was several times while he was in his vehicle on Lena Street, but managed to drive 4 blocks before he lost consciousness and lost control of his car on East Lafayette Street.

Louisiana Speaker of the House Clay Schexnayder made a visit to the monthly Louisiana Loggers Association (LLA) meeting in Winnfield along with other special guests Louisiana House of Representatives Rep. Chris Turner, Rep. Jack McFarland, Rep Danny, Rep. Wayne McMahon, McCormick, Rep Michael Echols, Rep Foy Gadberry, Rep, Rep Gabe Firment, Rep Dodi Horton, Rep Rodney Schamerhorn, and Senators Jay Morris and Louie Bernard.

The visit came after last months House Bill 57, also known as the Civil Justice Act, was passed giving relief for the logging industry and other commercial business as it addresses the liability crisis many businesses were running into.

The Rapides Foundation’s seventh annual Symposium will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, from 3- 4:30 p.m. and will be presented in a virtual format for the first time. The Symposium will focus on how community health status can be improved by addressing behavioral and social determinants of health. Featured speaker Regina Benjamin, M.D., who served as U.S. Surgeon General from 2009-2013, will present “Combating Health Disparities: Narrowing the Gap.”

District Judge of the Eighth Judicial District Court Jacque Derr and the Winn Parish Police Jury met in court on Aug. 17 for the lawsuit filed against the Winn Parish Police jury by the judge in July “to fund the said court in accordance with their duty and obligation to do so,” as the petition Derr filed in July stated.

Sedrick Swagerty, of Maryville, Tennessee, was struck and killed in Winn Parish on August 25 pn Hwy 84, near Allbritton Road.

For reasons still under investigation, Swagerty turned from the shoulder and entered the westbound travel lane. This resulted in Swagerty being struck by a 2007 Dodge pickup. The collision ejected Swagerty off of his bicycle, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Winn Parish School Board met for their regular called meeting to open the school year.

With the special called meeting the week before, the Winn Parish School Board announced their back-to-school plan to safely return during COVID-19, but amendments were made to allow for children k-5 to attend virtually on Fridays, instead of attending face-to-face all five days.

Superintendent Steve Bartlett said this will give time for the teachers to make their virtual lessons, where before they had no day to attend to students to the virtual only students like teachers in 6-12 grades.

The City of Winnfield hosted an appreciation lunch for the Winnfield Police and Fire Department.

“We wanted to let them know we’re not like a lot of those cities that are in the business of defunding the police departments and fire departments,” George Moss, Mayor of Winnfield said. “We realize how important they are to us, and how important they are for the people of Winnfield. We wanted to show our appreciation for them, it’s the least we could do.”

Jessie Philips grilled hamburgers on the grill, and lunch was served to those who attended free of charge, and a raffle gave gifts to five lucky winners.

Winn Parish Medical Center was visited by the owner, Rock Bordelon and many others on Monday, August 10. He also announced that the Medical Center will be receiving renovations and that their 180+ employees will be receiving bonuses for their hard work during the COVID-19 crisis.

Bordelon said that the facility, which was bankrupt when he bought it in 2016, was the only one of his 12 hospitals that exceeded expectations financially and “have gone above and beyond during this crisis time” with taking in COVID patients from other areas to help treat them.

“Every employee will be getting a bonus that worked,” Bordelon said. “Everybody stepped up. From the janitorial department, housekeeping to the nursing staff, everybody will be receiving the bonus to show our appreciation.”

The school district came to the decision to to push back the start of school from Aug. 10 to Aug. 17, to allow teachers and faculty time to record lesson plans for online learning, and to prepare for the new updated face-to-face learning.
