Sheriff’s Department In Fatal Shootout

The following information was received from M/T Daniel “Scott” Moreau of Louisiana State Police Public Affairs Section of the Alexandria Region, regarding an officer involved shooting that occurred near the Winn Parish-Natchitoches Parish line.

“On April 11, 2018, at approximately 1:00 p.m. Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigation/Alexandria Field Office (LSP AFO) responded to an officer involved shooting in the Chee Chee Dam area of Winn Parish. LSP AFO was requested to investigate the shooting by the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Department.

Driver Fails to Yield to Winnfield Police Officer Responding to Emergency Call

In the early hours of Monday, April 9, 2018, Winnfield Police Officer Kerry Mullins was involved in an automobile accident. Officer Mullins was northbound on highway 167, responding to an emergency call, when another driver approached from the south side of Church Street and shot across highway 167, hitting the police unit, driven by Officer Mullins.

Pleasant HillCrossroads Water Board Issues Urgent Message to Users

An urgent letter to the members of the Pleasant Hill – Crossroads Water System was received from the Water Board regarding water usage in the referenced area.

The letter read in part, “Due to the main storage water tank being off-line for necessary maintenance and repairs, there will be very limited storage capacity for water availability, at this time.”

Early Voting, April 14 21, 2018

On Saturday, April 28, 2018, residents of Winnfield will vote in a run-off election to choose a new Mayor for the City of Winnfield. Candidates vying for the mayoral seat are Jessie Edwards and George Moss. Residents of District 1 will elect a new City Councilperson to represent them, with their choice being between Lawanda Holden and “Ann” Pinkney.

Local Charged With Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Burglary, Arson and More

The Louisiana Office of the State Fire Marshal issued the following News Release after an incident that occurred in Winnfield on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.

WINN PARISH, LA- The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal has arrested a Winnfield man for allegedly crashing into a home and setting it on fire in an attempt to kill a woman.

Anthony “Tony” Autrey (DOB 6/18/61) was booked into the Winn Parish Jail Tuesday, April 3, for one count of Aggravated Arson, one count of Attempted 1st Degree Murder, one count of Aggravated Burglary and two counts of Aggravated Arson, one count of Attempted 1st Degree Murder, one count of Aggravated Burglary and two counts of Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property. The OSFM was contacted just after 11 a.m. to assist in determining the cause and origin of a fire at a home in the 300 block of Faith Drive in Winnfield.

2018 Louisiana Forest Festival Pageant Queens Crowned

The Miss Louisiana Forest Festival Pageant was held Saturday, April 7th at the WSHS auditorium. Each year the Pilot Club of Winnfield hosts the pageant to crown queens who will participate in the Forest Festival activities including riding in the parade. Many contestants participated to win their place as “Queen” for each age division. This year’s parade is set for Friday, April 20th beginning at the Earl K. Long Memorial Park.

Ladies who judged the contestants were from Jacksonville, Fl. and West Monroe. Each judge scores the ladies on various categories and the scores are given to three other individuals who “tally” the scores. After the tallies are confirmed among those three, the winners are announced. Judges are also given the job of choosing a winner in each category for “Most Photogenic”, “Prettiest Eyes”, “Prettiest Hair”, “Best Fashion”, “Prettiest Smile” and “Most Beautiful”.

Winnfield Lion’s Club Hosts Their Annual “Just Because” Rose Campaign

The Winnfield Lion’s Club delivered 300 dozen beautiful, long stemmed roses to Winnfield residents March 16th. This event is set each year between Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.

Many dozens of roses are pre-purchased by individuals and delivered to lucky recipients “Just Because”. It is a great way to say, “Thinking of you” or “You mean so much to me”. Not only do individuals purchase the roses, but sponsors gather to ensure that every female resident at the local nursing homes receive a dozen each.

Mrs. Jane Purser Honored At March 2018 Rotary Meeting

On March 7, 2018, the Winn Rotary Club held their regular noontime meeting at Lynda’s Country Kitchen, with Brother Michael Brakefield as the special guest. Brakefield, the pastor of Hope Chapel in Jonesboro, spoke to the group that gathered over lunch, about his own time spend homeless and incarcerated, and about the passion he has to address homelessness in our own community.

He then discussed plans for the Kisatchie House of Hope shelter that will be opening in Winnfield. He also invited those in attendance to join with Brother Jared Little at First United Methodist Church for an informational banquet about the planned Kisatchie House of Hope.

Walker Family Participates in 2018 Ride AtaxiaDallas

On March 24,2018 Kate Walker, along with her parents, Jason and Rachel and about another forty plus people that formed “KATE’S KREWE” participated in the 2018 RIDE ATAXIA-DALLAS in Denton, Texas. There were over three hundred cyclists participating in the event.

Ride Ataxia has three courses for riders, 6 mile, 25 mile and 50 mile rides and is used as a method to raise funds for research by the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance in search of a cure for Friedreich’s Ataxia, a rare genetic, degenerative, lifeshortening nuero-muscular disorder that afflicts about 15,000 people worldwide and 5,000 people in the United States.

17Year Old And Juvenile Arrested, Charged With Two Local Burglaries

The Winnfield Police Department issued the following News Release on Friday, March 29, 2018.

On March 28, 2018, Winnfield Police Officers responded to a burglar alarm at Mac’s Fresh Market, located at 1111 West Court Street in Winnfield. When officers arrived, they saw someone inside the store, and Winnfield Police Officers and Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheriffs quickly surrounded the building to prevent the escape of the suspects. After a search of the building, Cody Dunlap (DOB 04/17/2000) of 1003 East Elm Street in Winnfield and a 16-year old juvenile were found inside the store and arrested.
