April 9 Deadline: Delivery Meals for Winn Students

From Winn Parish School Board:

Winn Parish School Board is committed to working to assist families with meals for schoolaged students. With the extension of the Governor’s ‘Stay at Home’ mandate to April 30th, we have explored other means to provide meals to our students. Winn Parish School Board is partnering with Healthy School Food Collaborative, a new program that will deliver shelf-stable, easily prepared meals to your doorstep for free. To qualify for this program, your children must be a student of Winn Parish School Board. Every week, Healthy School Food Collaborative will deliver free breakfasts and lunches for all children who have submitted an application and who are enrolled in Winn Parish schools. To receive these shelf stable meals, you must register on the link provided on the Winn Parish School Board website, www.winnpsb.org.

CITY OF WINNFIELD DECLARES CURFEW AND STATE OF EMERGENCY

On Thursday, March 26, Winnfield Mayor George Moss declared a state of emergency for the City of Winnfield, putting the city in line for federal funding. He addressed the public via press conference alongside Lieutenant Chuck Curry to explain the additional mitigation measures for the city. Effective immediately, the curfew for juveniles under 18 is from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. until further notice.

Winn Parish Adjusts, Implements Telehealth Mitigation Measures

On Monday, March 23, leaders of Winn Parish held a press conference to disperse vital information reflecting how the parish is responding to the slow spread of COVID-19, aka coronavirus. In attendance were Winn Parish Police Jury President Josh McAllister, Winnfield Mayor George Moss, Winn Parish Medical Center CEO Kathy Hall, CEO of Winn Community Health Center and Trinity Community Health Centers of Louisiana Deano Thornton, Autumn Leaves Administrator and Winn Parish School Board member Matt Walton, Juror Tammy Griffin, and Juror Deionne Carpenter.

TWO COVID-19 CASES EMERGE IN WINN PARISH

As of Monday, March 30, Winn Parish had two confirmed cases of the virus.

The first confirmed case was announced by Sheriff Cranford Jordan via Facebook on Wednesday, March 25, at 11:57 a.m. As the name of the case cannot be shared, Sheriff Jordan advised residents to “shelter in place and use protective measures. The state monitors the case.” Sheriff Jordan also responded to an inquiry stating that the confirmed case is not a prisoner.

FOOD PANTRY SERVES THROUGH CRISIS

The Winn Food Pantry, operated out of the First Presbyterian Church by volunteers, continues to serve the community every Thursday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. even during these stressful times, it was confirmed today.

ADDITIONAL SCHOOL YEAR CHANGES

Gov. Edwards sought and attained several waivers and exceptions to legal requirements surrounding education in Louisiana. These actions effectually cancel all LEAP tests, EOC exams, teacher evaluations, and school/district accountability for the 2019-2020 school year. Students will not have to make up the school days or instructional minutes. The legal requirement that all teachers work a minimum of 180 days has also been waived. These mandates apply to both public schools and non-public schools participating in the La. Student Scholarships for Educational Excellence Program.
