Fresh Term for City Council and Mayor is Underway

The beginning of a new term of leadership has begun in Winnfield, for the new city council plus readministered members, plus our new Mayor.

The June monthly meeting was called to order by Mayor elect, George Moss, with the invocation to follow, led by Chief Montgomery, and the Pledge of Allegiance to our country’s flag. There were many in attendance, as far as public goes, for this first meeting of a new term of elected officials. As far as old business, action items, there were none on the agenda for this meeting.

Pea Patch Adds Eyecatching Artwork to Building

If you know that Thursday’s are chicken salad days, then you must be familiar with Winnfield’s little treasure, Pea Patch Gallery.

This gem is owned by Gail Shelton who purchased the building in 1991, opening the doors in 1992 after renovations. When the building was first operated, it was “Heard’s Hardware” which opened in 1908, making this building over 100 years old. Breard Carpenter owned it after that, in 1967, who opened “Winn Department Store”.

School Board Announces Test Scores Are Ready for Grades 3-8th

The Winn Parish School Board held their monthly meeting on July 2nd. After the Invocation and the pledge, the roll call was taken, with all members present with the exception of Romana Moore, Durane Johnson, and Leah Clingan. After the approval of the minutes from June’s meeting, the board voted on making the Bank of Winnfield and/or Sabine State as an Official Depository.

Rita James Celebrates 12 Years of Service as Winn R.O.V.

Monday, July 2nd, fellow colleges of Ms. Rita James showered her with a retirement party for 12 years of service as a Winn Parish Registrar of Voters. Rita James is a native of Sikes, Louisiana and a graduate Sikes High School. She moved to Natchitoches in the late 60’s with her husband Bennie, while she was attending college.

Grand Opening for Legacy Hospice Held

Wednesday, June 20, Legacy Hospice hosted their ribbon cutting ceremony, and opened their doors to serve the public. Legacy Hospice is located at 100 South Magnolia, Winnfield. It has a great team of administration, ready to help your family and loved ones. Considered to be the model for quality, compassionate care for people facing a life-limiting illness or injury, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the person’s needs and wishes. Hospice focuses on caring, not curing and, in most cases; care is provided in the person’s home Hospice care is covered under Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance plans, HMOs, and other managed care organizations. Legacy Hospice has 21 offices, in seven states, which serve 158 counties and parishes. Legacy Hospice was established to provide home care for terminally ill patients.

Librarian Begins New Chapter

Oh the Places You’ll Go is one of the many classic children’s books by Dr. Seuss written not only for children but also with surprisingly fascinating twist for graduating students and adventurous adults. Themes of this delightful story include exploration, choices, perseverance, awe and amazement. Like Dr. Seuss, the dedicated assistants of the Winn Parish Library, under the direction of Library Director Amy Vines, supply opportunities to explore genealogy and history, choices fro special needs students, perseverance through on-line educational studies for teenagers, parents and senior adults, and the amazement of learning to read through literacy tutoring. Popular entertainers have been invited to delight and enlighten patrons of all ages.
