Can FEMA Help My Family Return to our Home? Understand What Losses FEMA May Cover

Hurricane Laura survivors who have uninsured or under-insured losses may be eligible for FEMA help to make their homes livable. FEMA assistance is not the same as insurance. Assistance only provides the basic needs for a home to be safe, sanitary and functional. Home damage must be related to Hurricane Laura. FEMA inspectors may contact survivors who registered for help to conduct a remote inspection and calculate losses.

Spend FEMA grant wisely

More than 28,000 Louisiana households have been approved for FEMA grants to help them recover from damage caused by Hurricane Laura from Aug. 22-27.

It is important to remember that the funds are to be used only for certain disaster-related expenses. FEMA may audit survivors to confirm they spent grants for basic home repairs, replacing essential household items or paying for somewhere to stay if they cannot return home.

FEMA sends survivors letters that detail approved uses for grants. These may include:

Sign-up for FEMA help after Hurricane Laura

If you were affected by Hurricane Laura from Aug. 22-27 and you live in Acadia, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Grant, Jackson, Jefferson Davis, Lincoln, Natchitoches, Ouachita, Rapides, Sabine, Vermilion, Vernon, or Winn Parish, you may be eligible for FEMA help.

Assistance provided by FEMA for homeowners and renters can include grants for rent and repairs to make their primary home habitable. It can also help other serious disaster-related needs like replacing essential household items, medical and dental expenses and funeral and burial costs.

Survivors should file an insurance claim at the same time as they apply to FEMA. Save yourself time, if you have insurance, you must file a claim.

“We’ve never had this kind of natural disaster,” President of the Winn Parish Police Jury Josh McAllister said. “When the national guard got here we were told we were the most severely affected parish in Louisiana besides the ones hit on the coast.”

Since Hurricane Laura swept through Louisiana on Aug. 27, and after the immediate aftermath of trees and power lines making the roadways in Winn Parish impassable, the communities in the parish have banded together.

“I got everything packed in my truck the Wednesday after the hurricane hit and haven’t been back home since,” McAllister said at the First Presbyterian Church where he, his wife and other volunteers had gathered to give out food and water to Winnfield residents.

Is the DATA Furnished to Louisiana Citizens True?

Dear Editor:

The Marx Brothers famously quipped, “Who ya gonna believe, me or your own eyes?” In Louisiana, our daily COVID-19 briefings have taken on the same spirit. Our hospitals were never overrun, the lockdown did not stop the spread, and “two more weeks” of restrictions has become six months. At some point, we must hold our leaders accountable with their own facts.

“It was the worst storm I’ve ever live through,” Sheriff Cranford Jordan said. “Most of the roads in Winn Parish were impassable, but we are blessed to live in a logging community where they could help clear the roads. We couldn’t have done this alone.”
