A Lawsuit was filed Monday against the Winn Parish Police Jury by District Judge Jacque Derr

District Judge of the Eighth Judicial District Court Jacque Derr filed a petition to the Clerk of Court on July 13 for mandamus and other relief against the Winn Parish Police jury this morning “to fund the said court in accordance with their duty and obligation to do so,” the petition states.

Relief needed for Louisiana loggers impacted by COVID­19

Louisiana’s forestlands cover 48 percent of the state’s area. Loggers harvest this renewable resource to provide the raw materials for Louisiana’s second largest manufacturing employer – the forest products industry. Loggers are considered “essential businesses” and worked through the worst time of the virus’ spread. Industry was then able to produce the personal protective equipment, shipping containers and toilet paper that every citizen needs in their daily lives. Loggers live throughout rural Louisiana and their employees and their families depend on the logging business for their livelihoods. There are 560 loggers in Louisiana employing more than 4500 workers.

Sheriff Cranford Jordan was sworn in by Winnfield City Judge Anastasia Wiley for his third term as on July 3.

“The lord has blessed me with a lot of good people,” Sheriff Jordan said. “The parish officials, the judges, the police jury, everyone. I’m blessed to have a good working relationship with them, and to have my wife of 42 years.”

Domestic Violence During COVID­19

The lockdowns following the COVID-19 pandemic have surged up the number of domestic violence cases within the United States. People were directed to stay indoors at their respective homes as it had been proved to be an effective measure for fighting against the coronavirus. While stopping the spread of the virus, they have also exposed the dangerous threats to victims of domestic abuse across the world apart for the deadly repercussions of the pandemic.

In abusive households, victims fear the aggressor inside and the virus outside. The confinement with abusive partners mostly result in physical and emotional violence. It is difficult for the victims to escape from the abusers and seek help due to the imposed restrictions. Some are dependent on their abuser due to lack of financial support.

The body of 38-year-old Dr. Richard Johnson, a Winnfield native and graduate of WSHS in 1999, was found in the Guadalupe River in San Jose, Ca. according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Growing up in Winnfield, Johnson was an active member of the WSHS FFA and Track and Field Team.
