Winn Parish Superintendent Steve Bartlett, who spoke to the Kiwanis club about the difficulties and importance of education during the COVID-19 pandemic

Tuesday, November 17, 2020 Winn Parish School Superintendent spoke to the Kiwanis Club. He has been in the education field for over 40 years and has been superintendent for 21 years. Children are his world. Normally at this time of year he would be giving performance scores for the state and district but there are no performance scores from last year due to school ending in March. Covid took the last 9 weeks of school last year and the beginning of this year. Then came Hurricane Laura and Delta and took away more school time. It is still important to educate children.

Thanksgiving extra special for RRMC Trauma Patient

Shelbi Poe and her family have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Yes, they are thankful for their 10 month-old twins, Jackson and Stella. But they are also thankful for the surgeons and staff at Rapides Regional Medical Center who saved Shelbi’s arm after an ATV accident earlier this year.

“It was April 4,” said Shelbi Poe, 26, of Leesville. “We were at home and since we were in the middle of COVID, we were having a small get together with family and friends.”

There was a bonfire. And crawfish. And then, a ride on a side-by-side in the pasture with friends. Shelbi was on the passenger side when the ATV flipped.

Toys for Kids big success in Winnfield

The annual toys for kids was held on Nov. 27 by Winn Parish Deputies, Winnfield Kiwanis and Winn Parish Fire District 3.

The event collected over $5,400 in four hours, and sheriff deputies will later buy toys for underprivileged kids to be picked up by their parents so they can have a Merry Christmas.

Artists will host Maker’s Fair Dec. 8­10

Northwestern State University’s Department of Fine and Graphic Art will present the annual Maker’s Faire, a bazaar of original art, handcrafts, textiles, paintings, ceramics and more created by students and faculty.

Early voting in Winn Parish begins November 20

For the Dec. 5, 2020 election, Early Voting will be held in the Registrar of Voters Office in Room 105 of the courthouse Friday, Nov.20 through Saturday, Nov. 28 (closed Sunday, Nov. 22, Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27) from 8:30 am until 6:00 pm. Bring a valid Louisiana Driver’s License or State ID.

Sample ballots are posted in the hall outside the Registrar’s office and are also available on the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.la.gov

Covid-19 safety precautions are still in effect. Please enter through the main entrance on Main Street and follow the signage to the Registrars Office. Voters are encouraged to wear a mask.

Winn Parish Sheriff Cranford Jordan hosted his annual Veteran’s Day Luncheon Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the Huey P. Long CLTCC and invited all veterans to come out and enjoy a barbecue chicken meal and celebrate all they did to protect and serve their country.
