WMS Cross Country Competes in W. Monroe

Led by Monica Smithson and Breanna Pray, the WMS 5-6 grade girls cross country team placed first at the West Ridge Chieftain Invitational held in West Monroe this past Saturday. Smithson finished 6th followed closely by Pray in 7th over the 1 mile course as the girls defeated an excellent field in their first competition of the season. Emily Nevels finished 17th followed by Emmalie Higginbothan, Destiny Smith, Addisyn Griffin, Rylee Duff, Elizabeth Page, Laniya West, Jada Smith, Natalie Bruce, Ellie Jo Bryant, Alli Jordan, and Mattie Miller.

In 5-6 grade boys competition Karson Hemphill was the first to finish for the team in a time of 7:48 followed by Caden Gorham, Jess Nelson, and Bryce Martin.

Whitaker Brothers Make NSU History

NSU graduates Cody Dean and Matthew Dane Whitaker, of Winnfield have made NSU history by becoming the first and only siblings to hold the universities highest title bestowed to a student, Mr. Northwestern State University. Crowned in 2014 and 2015, Cody and Matthew served the university and the Natchitoches community at several events. “One of my favorite service initiatives was helping raise money for the Empower Nepali Girls Organization. With help from so many generous donors we were able to build a school for children in Nepal” said Matthew.

L.I.F.E. Brings Home the JMA Gospel Duo/Group Award

The Josie Music Awards packed the Celebrity Theater in Dollywood Saturday, September 8 for an incredible full production show. It was a weekend just for the independent music community starting with red carpet and media to an amazing production.

The Josie Music Awards or JMAs is the largest independent music award production and held it’s 4th Annual award ceremony inside the Dollywood Theme Park, celebrating those in the independent music industry like no one else can. This was a huge event just for amazing talents within the independent community of many different genres. The exposure the nominees received from this event cannot be matched.

Ms. Jana Smith Speaks on PBIS Program at Rotary Club

For the meeting on Wednesday, September 12, the Rotarian for the week was Pastor Kevin Smith, who also serves as the current president of the Winnfield Rotarians. His guest speaker was Jana Smith. Jana holds a career of being an educator at the Winnfield Primary School. She also helps with the ministry of First Methodist Church along side her husband, Kevin Smith.

For her program she gave insight of a program/grant that was given awarded the Winnfield Primary School named PBIS. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Incentive System. In 2003 this program was introduced, and in 2011 it was mandated in the state of Louisiana that every school carry out this positive behavior incentive. This is an effort to help reward positive and good behavior in the school system.

Traffic Stop Results in Illegal Drug Charges

On the afternoon of September 11, a routine traffic stop resulting in the arrest of a Winnfield man on illegal drug charges.

Sgt Brian Glenn of the Winnfield Police Department was conducting a traffic stop for a stop sign and seat belt violation and upon further investigation found Glen Z. Wade, age 61, in possession of several grams of crystal methamphetamine.

Suspects Identified for Last Weeks Shooting

UPDATE—9/12/2018 Suspects in this case have been identified as Brian L. Breaux, age 20, and Jabari A. Hall, also age 20. Both are still incarcerated in the Natchitoches Detention Center on unrelated charges. Warrants have been issued for their arrest. Charges include Attempted 1st Degree Murder and Attempted Armed Robbery. Breaux also faces additional charges of Home Invasion and Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon. Upon release from Natchitoches, they will be brought to Winnfield and set for arraignment.

A charge only means there is enough probable cause for an arrest. Persons are presumed innocent until found guilty by a court of law.

Former Winnfield Officer’s Life Taken in Car Accident

State Troopers responded to a car accident around 6:30pm on Friday, September 7th. The crash involved a 2006 Ford Crown Vic—the Police Vehicle—driven by Montgomery Officer Kirt R. Ricks III of Winnfield; and a 2006 Ford pickup, driven by Gary W. Pinder.

The police vehicle was northbound on US Hwy 71 when Ricks lost control and excited the right side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, Ricks overcorrected his vehicle, reentered Hwy 71, and traveled into the southbound lane.

This action resulted in the police vehicle colliding with the Ford pickup. Ricks and Pinder were pronounced dead at the scene. Pinder’s only passenger, identified as Robert Carter of Montgomery, was not wearing his seat belt and sustained minor injuries.

Botched Robbery Attempt Results in Shooting

Winnfield—-An attempted robbery at a residence located on Ridge Avenue in Winnfield resulted in a Winnfield man receiving multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers were called to the residence at about 11:30 pm Tuesday night, September 4, by neighbors who heard the gunshots.

Upon arrival it was discovered that a male victim had left the scene and sought medical treatment at the local emergency room and later transferred to the Rapides Regional Trauma Center in Alexandria where he is now listed in stable condition.

Patrick Horn, Former Local, Held Book Signing for New Release

Saturday, September 8th, Patrick Horn held a book signing for his newest, and first release of Pad Pennywell. Horn was raised in the community of Atlanta, Louisiana, where he graduated from Atlanta High School.

He stated it took him altogether roughly five years to complete this book. Although it is listed as a Historical Fiction, the story he was inspired with came from his Grandfather, Wilber “Bill” Barton.

Hurricane Season to Reach Peak in the Coming Weeks

The sleeping giant may be about to awaken.

Hurricane activity in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico is forecast to ramp up over the next couple of weeks. “Weather models have flipped the switch on the Atlantic hurricane season and see multiple areas of development possible starting mainly this weekend,” weather.us meteorologist Ryan Maue said.

One storm could spin up in the Caribbean over the next couple of days and potentially affect Florida over the Labor Day weekend. Looking further ahead, “there is the potential for two or three tropical features spinning over the Atlantic by the second weekend in September,” AccuWeather meteorologist Dan Kottlowski said.
