The 25 ^th annual Hog Dog Trials are set to begin at the Winn Parish Fairgrounds on Oct. 14 and last until Oct. 18 after COVID-19 delayed it from its original March date.

Winn Parish will soon be filled with competitors from across the world to watch and compete in our down home tradition and competition of hog baying.

Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials began in 1995, due to its namesake and native of Winnfield Earl Long being an avid stockman and boar hunter, and saw 1,200 people enjoy the festivities, but now has more than 12,000 visitors.

State Representative Jack McFarland (R-Jonesboro) is blowing the whistle on what he says is a disastrous mismanagement of funds by the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (LERAP). McFarland says that the state fund has failed to process or pay thousands of applications for individual assistance to the fund since July, leaving a balance of over $15 million in CARES Act money in the fund while Louisiana families struggle to make rent and fight eviction.

Due to Hurricane Laura, making landfall on August 27, 2020, the Winn Parish Police Jury is coordinating the collection and removal of disaster debris. Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin is joining registrars of voters across the state the week of Sept. 21-25, 2020 to host Voter Registration Week activities aimed at registering eligible citizens to vote.

“Registering to vote is the critical first step in making your voice heard at the ballot box,” Ardoin said. “This fall, voters will select leaders at all levels of government and I encourage all unregistered voters to register to vote. Check your registration status at GeauxVote.com or on the GeauxVote app.”

Louisiana was one of the first states in the nation to implement an easy, convenient online voter registration portal. Citizens with a valid Louisiana driver’s license or Louisiana Special ID card can register online 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the convenience of their home or office by visiting https://voterportal.sos.la.gov.

Every year, the Louisiana National Guard recognizes September as Suicide Prevention Month and participates in activities and training to ensure units and leaders have the skills to recognize and intervene in potential suicide situations.

Every guardsman within the LANG participates in their respective unit’s suicide prevention activities during the month to the greatest extent feasible in order to promote continuing efforts to stop suicides within its ranks and identify resources available during a time of crisis.

“This has been an historic year of challenges for the Louisiana National Guard, and I’m incredibly proud of how each and every soldier and airman has answered the call without fail and performed with excellence and integrity,” said Brig. Gen. Keith Waddell, adjutant general of the LANG. “At this time, it is imperative that we reach out to our teammates and check on their health, both physically and mentally.”

While the 2020 Boston Marathon had been cancelled due to COVID-19, the 17,000 runners around the nation still took to doing the event in droves virtually. Among the runners, Ashley Crawford of Winnfield started her virtual Boston Marathon at the Winnfield Senior High School, and was greeted by family and friends who came to cheer her on Sept. 12.

“Doing the Boston Marathon was always on my bucket list, and I was pretty disappointed that it was cancelled,” Crawford said. “But in a way, it was more special since my family and friends were able to be there with me.”

The Boston Marathon put on an app that allowed all runners who participated virtually to see where they would have been on their journey in the actual 26.2-mile marathon.

Survivors who purchased or rented a generator and/or chainsaw as a result of Hurricane Laura may be able to receive FEMA reimbursement.
