The Rotary Club of Winnfield showed

The Rotary Club of Winnfield showed its support to the student- athletes in Winn’s 4-H Outdoor Skills program with a presentation of arrows and .22 ammunition for use in the program. Agent Donny Moon spoke briefly to the club at its Feb. 1 meeting and brought with him three participants from Winnfield Middle School. In photo are Matt Walton, Wyatt Jordan, Lathan Snowden, Jennifer Vidrine and Ethan Boone.

Randa Connor Speaks to Kiwanis Club January 23

Randa Connor spoke to the Kiwanis club Monday, January 23, 2017. She grew up in Winnfield and after college knew she wanted to serve her community. She has a degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice and is employed by Eckerd Kids. This job involves meeting the needs of children. In Winnfield she is involved with the Hog Dog Trials, the Forest Festival and the Winnfield Coalition.

The Winnfield Coalition is a group of business individuals who are working through community services to help others, in particular children. The coalition meets the 2nd Monday of each month at noon at the Library and anyone that would like to be involved is welcome to attend the meetings.

Kisatchie Quilt Guild January 19 Meeting

The monthly meeting of Kisatchie Quilt Guild was held on January 19,2017 with Carolyn Bramlett opening with prayer following by the Pledge of Allegiance. Reading of the November meeting minutes was given by Secretary Virginia Smith and Treasurer Billie Ann Bates gave her report. Benevolence report was given and request was taken for cards to be sent.

There was no report from the I Spy and Burn Quilt projects committee.

It was announce that the Jefferson, TX quilt show will be on January 27, 28 and 29, 2017.

The students of WSHS have earned a combined total 4,285.4 Accelerated Reader points for the 1st nine weeks of school. The top point earners for first block classes were honored with a pizza party on Monday, December 19, 2016. WGHA November Meeting Held

On November 19, 2016, the end of the year meeting of Winn Genealogy & Historical Association was held with a very good attendance. Guest speaker Mr. J.C. Hanna was introduced by program chairman Donald Boyett and held everyone’s attention with the revelation of the help needed to care for graves of Confederate soldiers. Mr. Hanna is the Louisiana Division Commander for The Sons of Confederate Veterans. Several of our members joined this worthy cause. We hope to have Mr. Hanna back during this new year. For those interested we do have some info on the SCV and there is a lot more to be found online.

Michael and Kayla Taylor Ratcliff announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Dannah Paige, to Oscar Villanueva, son of Oscar Sr. and Caritina Villanueva. Dannah and Oscar will exchange vows on January 28,2017 at the pavilion of the pines, 290 Co. Rd. 252, Jasper, TX. The 4:00 pm wedding will be followed by a sit-down dinner and reception.

American Legion Auxiliary Packs Christmas Bags For Nursing Home Veteran

Each year during the Christmas season, members of the Winn Parish American Legion Auxiliary Unit 8 assemble gift bags to be delivered to veterans residing at Autumn Leaves Nursing Home and Winnfield Nursing Home. Each bag contains a lap blanket, holiday mug, toiletries, sox, a sack of Christmas candy, and a personal note of gratitude from the local unit. Shown above are members of the American Legion Auxiliary with some of the bags they filled at a recent meeting.

Local Lions Have Program on St. Judes

Shown in the picture with Lions Club President Dianne Kennedy is Karly Hubbard Stewart (on left) who presented the November 22 program to the club on the St. Judes Marathon. Mrs. Stewart is athe leader of the approximately 15 people who are going to Memphis, TN, to take part in the run on December 3, 2016. this is the third year the Winnfield team has participated and the group has pledged $2,500 for St. Judes. To reach their goal, the runners have held a golf tournament, bake sale, gumbo dinner, and sold tshirts. It costs 5 million dollars a day to operate St. Judes hospital for children. There is no charge for medical care and families of the patients are provided lodging at no cost. The survival rate for children with lueukemia has improved from 4% to 84% partially due to the research and care of the St. Judes Foundation.

Norris and Mitzi Curry

Norris and Mitzi Curry will be celebrating 50 years of marriage and 50 years in the gospel ministry on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Calvary Baptist Church Family Life Center on Hwy 84 east of Winnfield from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. They have served at 8 different churches in their 50 years of ministry, including their home church, Hurricane Grove Baptist Church in Sikes, Calvary Baptist Church, Winnfield, and Hodge Baptist Church, Hodge. In addition, they served at Coldwater Baptist Church west of Natchitoches, Temple Baptist Church in Monroe, FBC Kentwood, Washington Baptist Church of Natchez, MS, and New Zion Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, MS. In addition to serving as pastor of these churches, Norris was chaplain at Winnfield Hospital for several years and Mitzi has taught piano lessons for many years in all the various locations they have lived. Norris also served as spiritual advisor at Humana Substance Abuse Clinic, Natchez and chaplain for two Hospice companies in Louisiana.
