Natchitoches, LA – It is not too late to start the application process at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts for current freshmen, sophomores and juniors. A completed application includes the student’s portion (short answers); parental permission; two teacher recommendations (one from an English instructor and one from a math instructor); one counselor recommendation; a recent (within the last calendar year) ACT or SAT score; and an official campus visit.

Amy Vines, Director of the Winn Parish Library System, spoke to the Kiwanis club Monday about the library and all the activities that are happening there. We have a beautiful new library and the citizens of Winn Parish should take advantage of that. There are computers and internet access, a children’s section, a reading room with a fireplace, and lots of books. They also have e-books.

The name has changed through the years but its commitment to the young workforce in our area has remained consistent. The Huey P. Long Memorial Trade School came into law during Louisiana’s 1938 legislative session and opened its doors on South Jones Street in October 1939. In 1970 the name changed to Vocational School and 20 years later to Technical Institution. In 1995 it was Louisiana Technical College. In September 2010, the school broke ground on its new $12 million campus just north of Winnfield Senior High School on Hwy 167.

Dr. Mark Shelton was guest speaker at the Jan. 18 meeting of the Rotary Club of Winnfield. He gave members an interesting insight of medical equipment by first giving an entertaining history of the industry standard, the stethoscope. Then he showed them the newest to arrive in Winnfield, a hand-held ultrasound device. Accompanying Dr. Shelton to the meeting were physician’s assistant Michelle Malzahn and physical therapist Jim Muse

Many service organizations feature weekly meeting speakers who address a range of topics other than those of the organization itself. The Rotary Club of Winnfield is one but recently heard from a speaker who told local members a little of the history of Rotary. Former district governor Pamela Stewart of Ruston who was here on Feb. 8 injected a number of quiz questions and the answers she received verified that much of her information was new to many. Most could recall that Paul Harris of Chicago with Rotary’s founder. But the trail ran cold beyond that.

The Rotary Foundation recently recognized Jay Hinckley, treasurer of the Rotary Club of Winnfield, for his outstanding level of personal giving to the foundation by naming him a “Major Donor.” The Rotary Foundation supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. The Foundation transforms gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary, it taps into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into Rotary priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Foundation grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact. The Rotary Club of Winnfield showed its support to the student- athletes in Winn’s 4-H Outdoor Skills program with a presentation of arrows and .22 ammunition for use in the program. Agent Donny Moon spoke briefly to the club at its Feb. 1 meeting and brought with him three participants from Winnfield Middle School. Randa Connor spoke to the Kiwanis club Monday, January 23, 2017. She grew up in Winnfield and after college knew she wanted to serve her community. She has a degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice and is employed by Eckerd Kids. This job involves meeting the needs of children. In Winnfield she is involved with the Hog Dog Trials, the Forest Festival and the Winnfield Coalition.

The Winnfield Coalition is a group of business individuals who are working through community services to help others, in particular children. The coalition meets the 2nd Monday of each month at noon at the Library and anyone that would like to be involved is welcome to attend the meetings.
