Tigers Look to Keep Recent Momentum Going as District Play Looms

Having been rained out for the majority of their predistrict slate, your Winnfield Tigers are hoping the (somewhat) warmer
weather will mean the rest of the schedule remains unaffected by Mother Nature. The Tigers are sporting a 4-5 record (2
game winning streak) with district play on the horizon. The tigers have recorded wins against Avoyelles Charter, Montgomery, Calvin, and Weston while suffering setbacks to Oak Hill (4-3), Montgomery (4- 3), Sacred Heart, Grace
Christian, and Converse (3- 2).

Out of the Past: Early Winn Parish Sports

Article Image Alt Text

The accompanying group picture recorded the interest in the 1930s in baseball. Harvey O. Myrick is shown third from left (standing) in the back row. The other identifications also bring back warm memories of this active group of sportsmen. The late Arnet Garris is first remembered as the genial clerk at H.A. (Dick) Porter’s Dixie Drug Store before completing  his working career atthe Winnfield U.S. Post Office. The late Hervert (Fat)  Bass was a former city marshal. It is now hard to recall that the young W. Warren Allen (Sr.) shown herewith as mascot grew up to become a successful business man and a high ranking officer of the prestigious Masonic Lodge piror to his untimely demise. H.F. (Bill) Holstead, the genial manager of this team, now lives on Little River with his second wife, the former and personable Ina Fulton. Volmer (Shorty) Bowen was always clowning but very intent when it came to his game of baseball.
