John Tatum Atkins

Mr. John Tatum Atkins, age 38 of Tullos, Louisiana passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018. Born Tuesday, April 15, 1980 in Pineville, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Carl Waters, J.O., Sr. and Yvonne Long Atkins; and uncle, Jimmy Waters. John was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a graduate of CLTCC, Huey P. Long Campus with a 4.0 G.P.A Welding Diploma. He was also a 2000 graduate of LaSalle High School and was employed by McCartney Well Service of Tullos. John was also a welder for Turner Industries. He was a loving son, brother, and father. John loved the woods, history, working, music, and singing. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Chasten Atkins; father, James Orlean Atkins, Jr.; mother, Elaine Marie Waters Atkins; and siblings, Clint Atkins, Jim Hudson, and Wendy Atkins; grandmother, Marie Waters; Chasten’s mother, Crystal Phelps.

Peggy Keiffer

Mrs. Peggy Keiffer, age 84 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018. Born Monday, August 14, 1933 in Center, Texas, she was preceded in death by her parents, Delton Thomas and Addie Marie Strawn Martin; husband, Hershel Floyd Keiffer; and sons, Dennis Floyd and Rex Lee Keiffer. Peggy retired from the Deer Park, TX School Sytem and also served her community as a Justice of the Peace. Her favorite passtime was reading. Peggy loved sharing her very creative storytelling and spending time with her family and friends. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, David Keiffer and wife Patricia; daughter, Becky Dougan; daughterin- law, Robin Keiffer; sister, Ola “Happy” Bertolett; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild. Peggy is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Richard Wayne Spangler

Mr. Richard Wayne Spangler, age 65 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018. Born Friday, January 16, 1953 in Leadville, Colorado, he was preceded in death by his daughter, LaRonda Nicole Spangler and father, Andrew Spangler. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Freda Lunsford Spangler; sons, Andrew Spangler (Molly) and Randy Spangler (Leigh-Ann); mother, Doris Roy Spangler; siblings, Bobby Spangler, Donna Spangler, Tina Erickson and Dee Gwin; grandchildren, Drew Spangler, Becca Spangler, Gus Spangler and Trevor Spangler. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with visitation beginning one hour prior to services in the church. Johnny Filmore Jones

Dr. Johnny Filmore Jones, DVM, age 83 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Monday, June 4, 2018. Born Tuesday, August 7, 1934 in Olla, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Filmore Jones and Vera V. Jones Wells; step-father, Tuley J. Wells; daughter, Vera Voncille Jones Cunningham; great grandson, Dylon Jay Stinson; and grandparents, John and Josie Long and Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Filmore Jones. Dr. Jones was an active vet in Rapides Parish for 56 years. He was also owner of Cenla Animal Clinic. Dr. Jones served as president of the Cenla Vet Association. He was a Police Jury Member for Ward 10 (District B), President of Rapides Parish Police Jury, and a member of Kingsville Baptist Church. Dr. Jones graduate from Texas A & M Veterinary Medical School, Class of 1963. He moved to Winn Parish for the last 4 years where he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Mary Corinne Hughen McCartney Rawls

Funeral services for Mary Corinne Hughen McCartney Rawls, 86, were held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 21, 2018 at Rose-Neath Southside Funeral Home in Shreveport, LA. Mary was born on June 28, 1931 in Dodson, LA to Joe Wheeler and Francis Eunice Berry Hughen. She retired from H&R Block after 35 years. Mary was a member of Summer Grove Baptist Church and loved being part of her Sunday school class and all of the members of their class. She was a dedicated worker at Grawood Baptist Church nursery for many years and has taught and loved hundreds of children in her many years of service there. Mary was also a member of Eastern Star, Sunset Chapter #227 for many years and was a past worthy matron. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 27 years, James Richard McCartney Sr.; sisters, Doris (Mrs. Ray) Simmons, Sadie (Mrs. Cecil) Taylor and Marcia (Mrs. Ed) Wiens and brother Joe Hughen Jr.; sons, Robert and Rodger McCartney and son-in-law, Gerald Jacobs.

Glen Roy Folden

Glen Roy Folden, age 74 of Winnfield, passed away May 21, 2018 at Autumn Leaves Nursing Home. Mr. Folden was a U. S. Army Veteran and also served in the Louisiana National Guard. He worked at Western Auto and Radio Shack in Winnfield for several years then later he also worked at Nichols, the City of Winnfield Street Department and the Road Department at the Winn Parish Police Jury. His passion was flying, although was not able to attain his pilots license due to some physical disabilities. Mr. Folden was the son of the late Roy Folden and the late Edna Luetta Rolen Folden and was also preceded in death by two brothers Robert and Rodden and four sisters Vivian, Sally, Betty Joe, and Edna.

Mr. Randy Asken, age 58 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Born Monday, October 26, 1959 in Jonesboro, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his parents Donald Ray and Margaret Ann Robinson Asken. Randy owned and operated Asken Repair where he worked as a mechanic. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sherry; daughter, Dena Ayala (Micheal), Winnfield, LA; son, Corey Asken (Crystal), Winnfield, LA; sister, Renee Nash (Barnie), Jonesboro, LA; brother, Ricky Asken (Kitty), Pineville, LA; step-children, Joseph Vines, Cassie Parker, and Shauni Lytle Grandchildren, Michael, Maezie, Makena, Kace, Annabeth, Nevaeh, Carson, Bailey, and Tinsley; and great-niece, Rilynn. Randy is also survived by a host of co-workers, friends, and family. Graveside services were held at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 25, 2018 at Garden Of Memories Cemetery in Jonesboro with Rev. Randy Dark officiating.

Allen Morse

Funeral service for Allen Morse, 86 of St. Joseph were held Friday, May 25, 2018 at 2 PM in First United Methodist Church in St. Joseph with Rev. Johnny Wilkins officiating. Interment followed in Wesley Cemetery near St. Joseph under the direction of Gill First National Funeral Home of Winnsboro. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 PM at the church. He was born to the union of John Dave and Myrtle Upton Morse on March 2, 1932 in Winnfield and passed from this life Wednesday, May 23, 2018 in Franklin Medical Center in Winnsboro. Mr. Morse was a member of First United Methodist Church in St. Joseph and a United States Navy Veteran. He married Claudine Stinson on March 23, 1957 in Nashville, TN. He retired from Tensas Parish School Board as a graphic artist and from Tensas Gazette having worked there for nearly 30 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; son Mel Morse; two brothers Alton and John Morse; and a sister Cammilla McCartney.

Peggy Jane Brand Bozeman

Mrs. Peggy Jane Brand Bozeman, age 86 of Winnfield, passed away May 23, 2018 at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, Louisiana. Mrs. Bozeman was born on December 11, 1931 in Sikes, Louisiana and a graduate of Sikes High School. She was preceded in death by her parents Louie D. Brand and Onie White Brand, her husband of 55 years, Estes B. Bozeman; sisters, Jimmie Jean Corry and Betty Lou Creel. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield, the Tremont Homemakers Club, as well as, The Readers Review Club. She was a homemaker and enjoyed leading her children in Brownies and Girl Scouts. She also loved reading, cooking, gardening, collecting and sharing recipes with her friends and family.

William Ellis “Bud” Kirkpatrick

William Ellis “Bud” Kirkpatrick, 82, of Hattiesburg, MS, died May 18, 2018, at his home. Kirkpatrick established the first public relations office at The University of Southern Mississippi in 1972, where he served as director. In 1997, he was named Assistant to the President for University Relations and held this position until his retirement in 2002. Kirkpatrick holds the distinction of being the longest continuous serving employee in the history of the University, with 45 years of continuous service. Kirkpatrick most recently received a Forrest Health Spirit in Action Award, which is presented for an individual’s commitment to the community. Kirkpatrick committed his adult life to promoting the Pine Belt. Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church with burial in Lake Park Cemetery in Laurel. Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 21, at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg and began at 10 a.m.
