Funeral services for Lizzie Mae Griffin Newsom were held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel, Winnfield, LA. Officiating was the Reverend Randy Johnson. Burial followed at the Sikes Baptist Church Cemetery, Sikes, LA, under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Born Lizzie Mae Griffin January 26, 1922 into the family of Harvey & Etta Mae Griffin the third daughter and sixth child. Lizzie was introduced to tragedy very early in life, when at barely six years of age she lost her mother, Etta Mae to injuries suffered from a fall. Next her oldest brother Luther Emerson succumbed to Typhoid Fever, then her youngest brother, Johnny Ralph, only four, were all lost in just 72 days. Five months later her second brother, Robert Lincoln drown while swimming. Three and a half years later Lizzie’s middle sister, Myrtle Irene was lost.

Burial followed at Brown Cemetery in Sardis, LA. Mrs. Keyes, 83 years of age, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018, in Natchitoches. She was born on May 7, 1934, to George W. Evans and Geneva Brian Evans in Winnfield, LA. She was a loving mother and sister and will be missed by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Archie Keyes. She is survived by her son, Johnny Keyes and wife Nancy of Natchitoches; and a sister, Ollie Baker of Groves, TX.

Born Tuesday, September 18, 1945 in Winnfield, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents George H. and Myrtle Evans Norris; first husband, Huey “Red” Hattaway; sisters, Ethel Louise Pool and Elizabeth Ann Blanchard; brothers, James Cletus Norris and William Robert “Dobbie” Norris; and great granddaughter, Angel Renee Vines. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Harry L. Brundridge, Atlanta, LA; daughters, Rose Mary O’Neal (Mike), Verda, LA and Susan Marie Reed (Michael), Pollock, LA; sons, Mark Hattaway, Atlanta, LA and Charles Randall Hattaway (Shelia), Winnfield, LA; sisters, Joy Bell Mercer, Winnfield, LA, Jewel Inez Taylor, Winnfield, LA, and Mary Catherine Lindsey (John), Bernice, LA; 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Dr. Jack B. Evans

Retired dentist of Winnfield, Louisiana, Dr. Jack B. Evans, age 98, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017. Born on Thursday, May 8, 1919, in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana, he volunteered for military service with the Army Air Corps in September, 1939, and served through the end of WW II, earning two Purple Heart awards and reaching the rank of First Lieutenant. After the war, he used the GI Bill to earn, in May, 1951, a DDS degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. He practiced dentistry for one year in Winnsboro, Louisiana, and then in Winnfield, Louisiana, from 1953 until he retired in 1993. Dr. Evans was a member of First Baptist Church of Winnfield where he attended the Sanctuary Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Winnfield Kiwanis Club, the Gideons, and the American Dental Society. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Helen Andrews Evans, and his parents, George and Lilly Evans.
