Winn Parish becomes a leader in Second Amendment Sanctuary

Winn Parish has joined Pointe Coupee Parish as the only two parishes in Louisiana to declare themselves as a Second Amendment Sanctuary and as such will oppose gun control measures enacted by other governmental bodies.

The resolution, offered by Juror Kirk Miles, passed last week. Pointe Coupee (New Roads) passed their resolution on August 10, just four days prior to the Winn Parish Police Jury action.

The only other parish to date that has addressed the second amendment sanctuary parish in Louisiana was in St. Mary Parish (Franklin) but they rejected the measure 10-1. Currently there is a petition in Caddo Parish asking for their parish government to become a Second Amendment Sanctuary.

This movement is a growing trend after Governor John Bel Edwards vetoed a measure that would have allowed residents to “conceal carry” a firearm statewide. The failure by Republicans to override the governor’s veto of the bill, just added fuel to the fire.

Jury to request ARPA funds for parish water systems

The Winn Parish Police Jury could be on the verge of initiating one of the biggest water works projects in parish history thanks to monies from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) that was signed into law March 11 of this year.

At their meeting last week, Jurors authorized their President, Joshua McAllister, to solicit proposals from water systems in Winn Parish for ARPA funds.

“If we are able to get awarded, the Jury will match some funds to help these water projects. This will be the biggest water workover ever to happen in Winn Parish.” McAllister said.

The ARPA package includes $350 billion nationwide in aid for state and local governments, along with additional funding for other areas like education, rental assistance and transit.

A 53 Year Journey Comes to an End Sept. 9

A 53 Year Journey Comes to an End Sept. 9

Pictured from left are: Dr. Randy Cole, Eva Rodriguez and Trenia Denis.

After graduating from West Monroe High School in 1968, Randy Cole began his journey at Louisiana Tech University. In 1972 he completed his Bachelor Science degree and was accepted to LSU School of Dentistry that fall.

During these 4 years he would become part of a study group that included Joe Gardner (Baton Rouge), Martin Morris (Zachary), Mike Nolan (Monroe) and Bill Gaddis (Jena).

In their senior year Dr. Cole and Dr. Gaddis determined that Winnfield would be a good place to start a practice. They joined Dr. Jack Evans here in Winnfield. By 1982 they had outgrown that original office so that year

Dr. Cole left to go solo at a newly constructed facility on West Court Street.

Why I Established a Morning Routine

Years ago before I established a morning routine, I would set my alarm in the morning allowing myself just enough time to hurriedly down a cup of coffee and get dressed before work. Needless to say,I had no extra time in the morning to exercise, pray, or make daily goals. I had always desired to exercise in the morning, have time to pray, and write down my goals for the day. I also had a dream that I would be able to go running in the mornings but never thought it was possible being I had never run a day in my life.

I had heard before that the most successful people get up at 5 am and have an established morning routine with their top (5) priorities being done first thing in the morning. I laughed at the mere thought of waking up so early, as I didn’t like mornings and I enjoyed sleeping; but I was in a quandary as I wanted to have time to exercise and have some time for myself in the morning.
