LLA’s First “Day of Louisiana Logging”

The Louisiana Loggers Association hosted their first Legislative Day in Winn Parish. LLA wants to thank the Louisiana Political Museum for allowing them to entertain in such a unique space, and they also wish to acknowledge the seven Louisiana senators and seven representatives, the chief of staff for Congressman Abraham, former congressman Rodney Alexander, local Police Jurors, city councilmembers, and of course Louisiana loggers who attended. The amount of rainfall discouraged the planned onsite logging job tour, but that will be rescheduled for a later, dryer date!

“I think in sound. How do you think?”

Last week at Rotary, Rotarian of the week Bob Holeman opened by stating that some guests speak about their jobs while others share about their causes. However, meetings come alive when speakers share about their passion. With this introduction, he paved the way for his guest (and wife) Diane Holeman to share about American Sign Language. Diane is an interpreter for the Deaf. She always wanted to communicate with this particular community and remembers as a child wanting to connect with her Deaf cousin Nancy, but Diane did not know how. She would stand amazed as she observed Nancy talking with her parents and siblings.

WPSB Honors Students of the Year, Reviews Audit

On February 3, the Winn Parish School Board recognized the Students of the Year winners and reflected on the audit for the previous year. Superintendent Steve Bartlett voiced, “It’s my pleasure to recognize outstanding students and their accomplishments.” In Winn Parish, the Grade 5 winner was Finlay McManus of Winnfield Middle School, the Grade 8 winner was Alyssa VanBlaricum of Winnfield Middle School, and the Grade 12 winner was Kate Nevils of Winnfield Senior High School. Mr. Bartlett explained that these three individuals will go to the rigorous regional competition, where Winn Parish has “always competed well.” Regional winners will advance to the state level, and Mr. Bartlett shared that he will be looking for a first place prize, adding, “I think this’ll be the year.” This year is Nevils’ third time competing as Student of the Year, as she also won in grades 5 and 8 – and last time won second place at state. Whisonant Selected as Louisiana’s TopYouth Volunteer of 2020

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honors Winn Parish student with $1,000, medallion and trip to nation’s capital.

Caroline Whisonant, 18, of Winnfield, was one of two and Kierce Smith, 12, of Baton Rouge, were named Louisiana’s top two youth volunteers of 2020 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. As State Honorees, Caroline and Kierce each will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C., where they will join the top two honorees from each of the other states and the District of Columbia for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, 10 students will be named America’s top youth volunteers of 2020. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, now in its 25th year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

City Council: Prison Water & Sewer Rates, Collab. With Police Jury

The City Council of Winnfield called a special meeting on Thursday, January 30, to discuss the prison facility water rates, introduce two amendments, and discuss a possible collaboration with the Winn Parish Police Jury to clean up adjudicated properties. Three of five councilpersons were present, with those absent including LaWanda Holden (District 1) and Gerald Hamms (District 2).

Trammell's Retirement Announcement

Melissa M. Trammell is retiring from the Winn Parish School Board on February 7, 2020. She has worked in public education in Louisiana for 44 years as a teacher, an Educational Consultant, Title I Director, and, lastly, in Winn Parish, as the Special Education Supervisor. She holds a BS, a M.ED. and an ED.S, all from Northwestern State University. She has also studied at Grambling State University and Brigham Young University.

SPED Supervisor’s Retirement Initiates Change In Leadership

An opening in Winn Parish School Board personnel has caused some shifting in educational leadership positions throughout the parish. Melissa Trammell’s upcoming retirement presented a vacancy in the role of Special Education Supervisor. The WPSB announced during the January meeting that four applicants were interviewing for the position. In the end, Winnfield Primary School Principal Candy Polk was given the position.

Mrs. Polk’s transition provided an opening at Winnfield Primary School, and Winnfield Middle School Assistant Principal Tiffany Martin accepted the position of WPS Principal.

At Winnfield Middle School, the Assistant Principal position will not be filled in the traditional meaning; however, WMS Athletic Director Brian Savell now also wears the hat of Administrative Assistant and will be filling in and carrying out Mrs.
