Winn Parish Students Graduate D.A.R.E. Program

Deputy Jones, Daren the Lion, and Sheriff Cranford honored Calvin winners on Wednesday, December 18: Dedriana Hobdy (workbook winner, right) and Reese Yocum (essay winner, center).

As the first half of the 2019-2020 school year comes to a close, Christmas isn’t the only thing on students’ minds. For the 5 th graders at Atlanta, Calvin, and Dodson, the end of December also means graduation – D.A.R.E. graduation, that is.

For the past 8 years, Winn Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Anna Jones has been investing in the future generations of Winn Parish. Deputy Jones takes 5 th graders through a 10-week program that teaches them how to make safe and responsible life choices.

The Gifts Of Laughter and Music: Retired Teachers December Meeting

The Gifts Of Laughter and Music: Retired Teachers December Meeting

Christmas came early for the Winn Parish Retired Teachers Association! On December 10, about 50 members gathered in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Bankston to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year.

After enjoying a delicious meal of holiday treats and warm fellowship, the members of the Retired Teachers organization assembled in the Bankston living room for a Christmas concert presented by three local musicians. John Holland, Minister of Music at First Baptist Church, opened the program by sharing some of his childhood memories about the days when music played a vital role in the education system. He commented that music is a universal language that relates to others, especially during the holiday season. Mr. Holland explained that he likes all styles of music, with jazz being his favorite. He then shared two jazz arrangements with the group, which included “The Christmas Waltz” and “Santa Baby,” made popular by the vocalist Eartha Kitt.

D.A.R.E. K-9 Demonstrations Across Winn Parish

Rows of children squirmed in their seats in the Calvin High School auditorium as they sat in anticipation. Murmurs and whispers rippled throughout the room as they waited patiently. Suddenly a hush fell across the awed students as they watched Miky make his grand entrance.

The 3-year-old Belgian Malinois strolled in accompanied by his handler, Winn Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Dylan Womack. The students’ eyes widened as they watched Miky come to the front of the auditorium. Once on stage, Miky received his instructions to find the drugs that had been hidden in one of four containers by local game warden and volunteer Suni Nelson. At once he set off, and within mere moments he was rewarded for a job well done finding the container that held the narcotics. The children were thrilled to see Miky showing off his talent for drug detection – but his next “trick” had them squealing in delight.

Delay in City Taxes

Tax notices for the City of Winnfield’s residential and commercial property owners, which traditionally are due the last day of December, have still not been mailed and city officials are not sure when they will be.

Parish property tax notices, which are generated by the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office and are also due the last day of December, were sent the last week of October. At that time, city officials projected their notices would be out the week after the parish tax notices were sent. The city uses a third party out of parish to print their notices.
