Unemployment Numbers Continue to Rise

According to the latest unemployment claims files from the Louisiana Workforce Commission, the initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending April 4, 2020 rose to 102,172 from the week ending March 28, 2020 total of 97,400. The unemployment insurance continued claims for the week ending April 4, 2020 increased to 120,744 from the week ending March 28, 2020 total of 58,027.

Winn Community Health Center Receives Additional Funding

On April 9, Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $8.3 million in grant funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration to support various medical projects around Louisiana, including coronavirus relief.

Every parish in Louisiana has an Office of Emergency Preparedness. The Winn Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness is funded through the state by federal money that flows through the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP). According to their website, GOHSEP works with local, state, tribal, and federal authorities; private-sector partners; and private nonprofits to “prepare for, prevent, respond to, recover from, and mitigate against future emergencies and disasters.”

The Winnfield Police Department is currently investigating the disappearance of a local man. Michael Green (pictured right), age 35 of Winnfield, has not been seen by family or friends since the beginning of March 2020.

Postponed: City of Winnfield Animal Shelter, Makeover Main

Governor Edwards has extended the Stay at Home order until April 30 for the great State of Louisiana. The City of Winnfield is committed to not only serving our community, but also stopping the spread of COVID-19. Our office closures will remain in effect until the Stay at Home order is lifted. Essential departments will remain in operation and on call for emergency needs. We ask that you bear with us during these times.

Due to the Stay at Home order and the City of Winnfield’s commitment to abide by the Governor’s order, the City of Winnfield Animal Shelter opening has been postponed until the Stay at Home order is lifted. The opening of the animal shelter is a top priority and we assure you that this will take top priority when normal operations return.

Grim COVID­19 Milestone: 5 Positives, 2 Deaths

Compared to several other parishes throughout the state, Winn Parish had only been mildly affected by the widespread coronavirus. However, on Saturday, April 4, Winn Parish residents learned that one of our own, an elderly patient, had succumbed to the virus, followed by another death on Monday. As of April 6, the case count for Winn Parish had risen to five, including the two deaths.

April 9 Deadline: Delivery Meals for Winn Students

From Winn Parish School Board:

Winn Parish School Board is committed to working to assist families with meals for schoolaged students. With the extension of the Governor’s ‘Stay at Home’ mandate to April 30th, we have explored other means to provide meals to our students. Winn Parish School Board is partnering with Healthy School Food Collaborative, a new program that will deliver shelf-stable, easily prepared meals to your doorstep for free. To qualify for this program, your children must be a student of Winn Parish School Board. Every week, Healthy School Food Collaborative will deliver free breakfasts and lunches for all children who have submitted an application and who are enrolled in Winn Parish schools. To receive these shelf stable meals, you must register on the link provided on the Winn Parish School Board website, www.winnpsb.org.

CITY OF WINNFIELD DECLARES CURFEW AND STATE OF EMERGENCY

On Thursday, March 26, Winnfield Mayor George Moss declared a state of emergency for the City of Winnfield, putting the city in line for federal funding. He addressed the public via press conference alongside Lieutenant Chuck Curry to explain the additional mitigation measures for the city. Effective immediately, the curfew for juveniles under 18 is from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. until further notice.
