When Jimmy Davis presented his Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana card at a health care facility ahead of a medical procedure, he was stunned at the response. Unbeknownst to him, he no longer had Blue Cross coverage.

A great weekend was had by all who attended the Sikes Wolf Creek Festival. Lots of vendors, great food and music and best of all, folks from all around came out to enjoy the festivities.

It all started Friday night with a delicious fish fry. The band Borderline, entertained with music and was enjoyed by all.

Saturday morning kicked off with a parade. From then on, people just kept coming to take part enjoying the day and what a beautiful day it was! The weather was perfect!

The Sundown band performed at 11 a.m. with Hunter Courville bring Zydeco music at 7 p.m.

The Winn Parish Sheriff ’s Office will participate Thursday in a nationwide program that lets local residents drop off old or expired prescriptions and unused over the counter medications for destruction.

Known as “National Drug Take Back Day”, the event will be held on Thursday (Oct. 23) at the Winn Parish Sheriff ’s Office between the hours of 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

It’s a no questions asked program that allows individuals to submit for disposal pharmaceutical controlled dangerous substances, other medications and vaping devices to law enforce ment officers.

The turn in location will be at the Winn Parish Courthouse outside of the Sheriff ’s Office.

Dr. Mark Shelton, a local physician, said it was while doing some research on hospice care that he came across information on procedures for medical disposal. It was there he found out about the DEA Take Back Day and how it could impact the community.

The annual Kiwanis fruit sale is going on now. This is our main fundraiser for the projects that we do for the children of our community and the world. The deadline for placing orders is November 15 ^th which is earlier than usual. Please contact a Kiwanian and order your fruit for Christmas. Available fruit includes apples, oranges, grapefruit, pears, clementines, citrus basket, and mixed four pack. Also available is cheese, avocados, and a wooden gift box including summer sausage and cheese.

The Winn Parish Health Unit is participating in a statewide campaign “Roll Up Your Sleeve Louisiana.”

Through the Louisiana Department of Health, the local health unit is offering free vaccine clinics to area residents. Even if you don’t have insurance, there is no charge for the flu vaccine. If you do have private insurance, please bring those cards, you’re insurance will be billed.

The event is open to the public, walk-ups are welcome and participants are encouraged to wear short-sleeves or loose fitting sleeves.

It will be held on Tuesday, October 26 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Winn Parish Health Unit, 301 W. Main St., Suite 101 in Winnfield. There will also be a Drive-Thru flu vaccine next to the Farmer’s Market.

The Winnfield Senior High School Tiger Football team lost against Avoyelles 12-40 last Friday.

This marks their second loss in a row after starting the season 3-0 this year.

The Tigers knew this game would be a test to stop a juggernaut, which a few weeks ago put up 86 points against Carroll High School in Monroe.

Before the game Coach Watson said that Avoyelles never punted the ball, always kicked onside kicks, always went for two point conversions and had players that were 6’8 and over 250 pounds.

The Mustangs got started early with rushing touchdowns, failing on one two point conversion but succeeding in another to bring it 14-0 quickly.

In the second quarter Malachi Jackson was able to bring the deficit down to a one score ball game with a 13 yard touchdown pass to Jake Norsworthy, the first passing touchdown the Tigers have had all season.
