Trials, Blessing of Winn’s WorstEver Natural Disaster Recounted One Year After Laura’s Unwelcome Arrival

As a boy growing up in Baton Rouge with a gracious 100 miles of trees, swamps and crops between us and the Gulf of Mexico, I never felt much threatened by hurricanes which, I believed, would surely dissipate before they reached the capital. Even during my LSU years, I can recall the couple of hurricanes that we “rode out” being not much more than Louisiana storms with a calmer eye in the midst.

When we moved to Winnfield where that safety net was stretched to some 200 miles, you’d have to believe a hurricane would be something you’d watch on TV, not through your den window. Especially when Katrina brought no more than a few clouds across our blue sky on August 5, 2005. But one month later when Hurricane Rita struck Lake Charles, her fury continued up through Winn, making believers of any doubters of God’s power, even this far inland.
