Winn Parish leaders have signed a resolution declaring the parish a “second amendment sanctuary.” While serving no legal function, the resolution means Winn Parish leaders are taking an official stance against the enforcement of laws they perceive as violations of the second amendment.

Winn is the third such parish in Louisiana. They join St. Mary and St. Tammany parishes in doing this. Police jury president Josh McAllister says over 62% of the counties in the country are second amendment sanctuary counties. He says the jury had a lot of support from across the parish to go forward with this resolution, and the residents of Winn Parish want to believe their rights are protected.

Luke Siegel was nine years old when he was seriously injured in a golf cart accident in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas.

It was July 2015, just twenty days after his dad, former Texas Tech men’s tennis coach Tim Siegel, resigned to spend more time with his wife and four children.

Luke suffered from an anoxic brain injury. And despite the doctors’ grim prognosis for Luke’s future, he did show some slow improvement. His fight inspired many people all over the country, even Drew Brees. This was incredibly special to Tim because of his and Luke’s love for the New Orleans Saints.

The entire nation paused this Saturday in remembrance of the 20 year anniversary to one of the darkest times in American history, the attacks that took place on 9/11.

Since the United States formed there have only been two attacks on our home soil, On Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor killing 2,403 Americans and wounding 1,178 others, and nearly sixty years later when suicide bombers hijacked four planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center in New York and one into the Pentagon. The last plane was overcome by the passengers of United 93, who thwarted the bombers plans, even though it costs them their lives, and it crashed in a field in Pennsylvania saving countless live at the Pentagon, that planes target.

Todd Beamer was one of those passengers on United 93, and as the passengers rebelled against the bombers, he shouted his iconic line of “let’s roll” before storming the terrorist.

The Atlanta High School fishing team had a good 2020-2021 showing as they qualified for the state tournament, and they had a good first outing for this season as the snagged first and second place in the Grand Bayou Tournament.

Cody King got first place and big bass of the day, with Denver Blackman reeling in second place.

The FFA Veterinary Science team of Calvin High School placed in the top 25 of the nation to qualify for competing in the national convention in Indianapolis, Indiana on Ooct. 27-30.

The team is made up of Emma Canerday, Kaylie Canerday, Kate Dupree and Gunnar Yocum with Ag instructor Chad Camp. While usually to qualify you have to win the state competition, this year due to COVID-19 the national convention only took the top 25 state winners from the states plus Puerto Rico.

The CHS team were required to do an online event to further cement their place in the competition, and were announced last week that they had made it in.

“The online tests can always be harder,” Yocum said. “In person if I have to identify equipment I can look around, turn it, look at different parts of it, but online I see a picture and I can’t do any of that.”

Not sure if football stadiums have defibrillators but Friday night there were a lot of hearts that stopped once or twice in the exciting Winnfield Tigers 22-20 victory of the Tiger variety from Jonesboro Hodge.

The Winnfield Tigers kept their edge in victory in a rivalry that goes back almost a century.

Winnfield got scores on a 71 yard pass interception return from Trey Stark, a junior defensive back, a pair of eight yard TD runs from seniors Travon Nichols and Dyllan Lawson and a pair of two point conversions Daniel Luke Page, a freshman.

The teams were knotted up 14-14 at halftime but like most of their battles, it would come down to the wire.

The Winn Parish Sheriff ’s office has aided various South Law enforcement agencies with equipment and manpower since Hurricane Ida struck the state a week ago.

Winn Parish Sheriff Cranford Jordan reports Winn Correctional Center Major Chad Chelette delivered a emergency generator on Wednesday of last week to Sheriff Jason Ard of Livingston Parish.

Then on Thursday, Winn Parish responded for another call for assistance.

They sent five vehicles and seven Winn Parish Deputies to Lockport in LaFourche Parish. Lockport was one of the communities in the direct path of Ida. Sheriff Jordan said the seven deputies will be assisting with security. They also carried additional fuel and water. They were followed to

Winn Parish is full of good people. Winn Parish Police Juror Josh McAllister stated, “I am amazed at the generosity of our people and would not want to live anywhere else in the world! Toni McManus McAllister and I are heading down, early Thursday morning to Livingston Parish and will deliver all of the donations that everyone brought this week. As well as those contributed by Effect Fitness, LLC. We will also bring some fuel and saws and help in whatever capacity we can. I can not begin to name everyone who contributed, but it was a ton and we know those people will be so thankful for it. Thanks again to everyone who contributed.

“Keeping our residents safe is our top priority,” Autumn Leaves Nursing & Rehabilitation Center administrator Matt Walton told Winnfield Rotarians at their Aug. 18 meeting as part of his report on how this local nursing home has responded to the Covid pandemic since it first appeared early in 2020.

Autumn Leaves’ preparations and response to the virus have seen results far better than reports from some other homes, he said. “The most positive cases we’ve ever had at one time has been eight. We’ve been blessed.”
