For the Rotary meeting on Wednesday, November 13, Rotarian for the week was Bryan Kelley. His guest speaker was Eddie Jenkins, a Winnfield native who received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from LSU. Jenkins became a licensed clinical social worker, worked 32 years for Louisiana Office of Mental Health, served as a therapist and clinical supervisor, ended his career as Deputy Secretary of the Office of Mental Health, and for the past 8 years served as Director of Mental Health for Volunteers Of America. Most importantly, Jenkins is proud of his two honorable sons and two perfect granddaughters, although he is most notably known for his love of all things Winnfield and football, for which he played center on the 1971 state runner-up team.

Lots of changes resulted from the most recent election, and the outcomes support the oft-spoken exhortation, “Every vote counts.”

For the office of Governor, incumbent John Bel Edwards won by a thin margin of 51% with 774,476 votes, compared to his opponent Eddie Rispone’s 734,136 votes.

Kyle Ardoin was elected Secretary of State with 867,456 votes (59%), where as Gwen Collins-Greenup raked in 601,110 votes. For those wondering where our parish stood, 1,371 more voters from Winn Parish chose Rispone than Edwards, and Winn Parish overwhelmingly preferred Ardoin with 74% support.

Winnfield decked the halls with boughs of JOLLY for Open House this year! Local businesses showed up and showed out with their Christmas décor and holiday spirit. Although the evening started out drizzly, the rain eventually subsided, so families were able to drive around and support our local restaurants, shops, and businesses.

The wintry evening truly set the scene for members of the community to remember what makes small towns like Winnfield so magical. Strangers turned into friends as shoppers and shop owners gathered and laughed as they posed for pictures. The Christmas lights lit up the night as neighbors and families bonded over delicious treats and promising giveaways.

Volunteers from the Winn Parish community are coming together to host a free meal for the people of Winn Parish who do not have family to spend the holiday with or who need a hot meal on Thanksgiving. The meal will be from noon to 2 p.m. on November 28 at Winnfield 1 st Assembly of God, 5693 Hwy 167, right across the end of 156. If anybody is interested in attending or volunteering their time and/or resources, please call 413-1100, 302-1116, 413-7963, or 628-5200.

.At the Police Jury Meeting on Nov. 6, Mr. Joshua McAllister opened bids on a John Deere 670G Motor Grader and a 2002 John Deere 310G Loader Backhoe, and a Triaxle Dump Trailer. Karen Tyler of Kenworth of Louisiana won the bid on the Triaxle Dump Trailer for $44,250. JJ Merchant of Purvis, MS won the bid for the grater ($5,777) and backhoe ($2,777). Purchases will be approved at the next meeting.

For the road materials and supplies for the year 2020, Mr. Mike Carpenter recommended that they go with the lowest price in each category.

At the Insurance Committee Meeting, Mr. Carpenter opened discussion concerning the rising health insurance costs. A decision was postponed until the next scheduled meeting.

Since there are always two sides to a story, the facts may speak for themselves. What follows is what took place at the Winn Parish School Board meeting on Monday, November 4, 2019.

WPSB President Joe Llaine Long called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance and an opening prayer, Mrs. Long noted that all members were present and welcomed the visitors.

The beginning of business occurred without incident. The executive committee report, order of business, and minutes from the last meeting were read and accepted.

This year’s Veterans Day Program, hosted by the Sheriff’s Office, had perhaps the biggest attendance to date! Almost 90 people were in attendance, 64 of which were veterans.

The speaker, Dr. Bill Robertson, delivered a moving speech recapping the intriguing life of World War II veteran Louis Zamperini. After introducing Zamperini’s unlikely start, Robertson discussed the pain, hardships, and inner conflict all soldiers wrestle with. However, he highlighted Zamperini’s startling conversion at one of Billy Graham’s crusades. Robertson concluded his message by reminding the veterans that the ability to extend mercy to others is a gift that has been given to them so that it can be shared.
