Nevils said, “We don’t know yet the extent of the loss of sales taxes for the parish, or any other loss in revenue to the parish.” WPPJ President Josh McAllister noted that when he looked at the parish’s sales tax two weeks prior to the meeting, they were down about $25,000 from March.

School Buildings Closed for Remainder of School Year

On Wednesday, April 15, Governor John Bel Edwards signed a proclamation closing K-12 public schools in Louisiana to students until the end of the current school year, with students getting their education via remote learning, as the state continues to fight the spread of COVID-19.

"Closing public schools in Louisiana for the remainder of the year is not a choice I was excited to make, but it is one that is necessary to protect the safety of our children, our teachers and staff, and the community at large," Gov. Edwards said. "But I want to be clear about something: this isn't the end of learning; it's just the end of students physically going to school campuses for the remainder of the semester. Remote learning will continue, and we will all work together to make sure that our students do not fall behind academically. In addition, we expect that school systems will continue to provide nutrition and meals for students."

He coached at WSHS for nine football seasons before leaving to coach at his alma mater for four years. Following that, Watson spent seven years at West Ouachita and two years as Head Coach and Athletic Director at Ruston Junior High School before returning last season to assist WSHS Coach Lyn Bankston. For the 2019-2020 school year, Coach Watson taught American history while coaching offensive line.

Coach Watson commented, “I’m just very, very grateful to be considered for this job. I’m fully aware of the tradition that Winnfield has in football, and I’m anxious to get started.”
