School Board “In Limbo” While Waiting

At the May 26 meeting of the Winn Parish School Board, Superintendent Steve Bartlett opened by commenting on the current state of things: “There’s nothing that we can compare this to because this has never happened before.” Mr. Bartlett explained that since education was not mentioned in Governor Edwards’ latest order, WPSB is “in limbo” while awaiting the next announcement on Monday, June 1. Mr. Bartlett reviewed that Winn Parish teachers, principals, assistant principals, and supervisors were all working diligently to try to continue educating students. WPSB pedagogical practices involved paper packets, digital instruction, and weekly contact between teachers and students.

Trista Tyler Memorial Awards $6,000 in Scholarships

The Trista Tyler Memorial Scholarship awarded $6,000 to Winn Parish Seniors that met the criteria for 2020. General requirements for this $500 scholarship are achieving an overall grade point average of 3.5 or better, earning an ACT score of 20 or above, being a member of a school athletic team for at least two years including senior year, remaining active in at least two clubs or school organizations, having a good attendance record with no major disciplinary action, displaying good character and a pleasant personality, and exhibiting dedication.

LDWF Schedules Drawdown for Saline Lake

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) in conjunction with the Saline Lake Commission has scheduled a drawdown of Saline Lake (Natchitoches and Winn Parishes) for giant salvinia control, organic reduction, and fish habitat improvement. The drawdown is designed to reduce the further expansion of salvinia as summertime temperatures promote maximum growth.

Winn Parish Library Announces Limited Opening

The Winn Parish Library branches are pleased to announce that they will begin a limited opening schedule effective Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at the Winnfield, Atlanta, Calvin, Dodson, and Sikes locations. The library will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day. In an effort to ensure the health of our patrons and staff, we ask that certain guidelines are followed:

• Staff and patrons will be required to wear masks at all times. Patrons will be issued a mask if they do not have one.

• Computers will be cleaned every hour, on the hour. Computer time will be limited to the remaining portion of the hour. Patrons requiring the full hour on the computer should arrive at the top of the hour. Headphones will not be available. Barriers will be installed between computers.
