MeetingKathryn James, 2015 Winnfield Senior High graduate, was presented with the check forher Kiwanis Scholarship at the June 15, 2015 Kiwanis club meeting. She will be attendingLouisiana College. Her major is biology. Her goal is to be a radiologist which will requiremedical school. She will play softball at LC and her coach will be Lyn Bankston who sheplayed under at Winnfield Senior High School. James was the captain of the Tiger softballteam that went to state this year and came in second. She was also involved in a lot ofextracurricular activities and had a high GPA.

The American Legion

The American Legion Audiliary Unit 9 of Winn Parish is proud to announce the 2015Louisiana Girls State Delegates. Pictured, from left to right: Jasmine King (daughter ofByron and Renada King), Madison Hataway (daughter of Andrea Hataway), MaKaylaShelton (daughter of Steve and Liz Shelton), MaKayla Maloy (daughter of Mike andSamantha Maloy), Natalie Lang (daughter of Mark and Tanya Lang), Kelsey Jordan(daughter of Bob and Katrina Jordan). King, Hataway, Shelton and Maloy will representWinnfield Senior High School, Lang will represent Calvin High School and Jordan willrepresent Atlanta High School. These young ladies traveled to Baton Rouge to take part ina mythical two-party political system, in which citizens gain special knowledge of how thepolitical process works. Elections are held to fill city, parish, and state positions. Activitiesinclude government briefings, legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies and conven-tions, debating, and voting.

Council hears citizen complaints

Citizen complaints, new ordinances, condemnations and street improvements were just a small portion of a twohour meeting of the Winnfield City Council on Tuesday, June 9. Several Winnfield citizens appeared before the council to express different concerns, the first being an incident that occurred at a recent Dixie Youth Baseball game at the Winnfield Recreation Center.

Winnfield Senior High School

Those receiving awards are Daja Bonner, Damien Bonner, D’Marcquis Craig, Amos McHenry, Daniel McHenry, LaPorcha Pimpleton, Demetri Sanders, and Xavier Wyatt. Broussard to perform at Winn Libraries

Over 600 children (and adults) have attended Winn Parish Library’s Summer Reading performances this summer, and there is more to come as Storyteller Sherry Broussard will be the guest performer on June 24 and 25. On Wednesday, June 24, Mrs. Broussard will be at the Moss Street Gym at 10:00 a.m., and at the Calvin Branch Library at 2:00 p.m. On Thursday, June 25, she will be performing at the main library in Winnfield at 10:00 a.m. and again at the Dodson Branch Library at 2:00 p.m.

Winnfield Middle School Beta Club “Rocks” The School Year

This year, the challenge that was met by all Beta Clubs in the nation was to “rock the country”, that was our theme. And Winnfield Middle School’s club has done just that all year. It started officially in January, when WMS hosted the District 1 convention for the second year in a row. At that level, students placed FIRST in Quiz Bowl, Speech, Living Literature, Group Talent, TShirt, Spotlight your Club; SECOND in Poster; and FOURTH in Banner. Earlier this month, 27 WMS Beta students travelled to Lafayette for two days to compete at the state level at the CajunDome. They participated in quiz bowl written tests and head-to-head buzzer rounds of competition, academic tests, living literature displays and talent shows.

Northwestern State University

Several Northwestern State University students are serving as teaching assistants and/or residential assistants as NSU conducts its 27th annual ADVANCE summer session. ADVANCE is a summer residential program for gifted and talented youth that offers intensive, fast-paced courses in the humanities, mathematics, natural science and computer science. Students selected to participate in ADVANCE enroll in one course during the three-week term. By working with carefully selected instructors and teaching assistants, each student is given the opportunity to attain maximum academic growth. Classes are  generally limited to 15 students.

School Board approves consolidated budget

The Winn Parish School Board met for the first monthly meeting since the end of 2014-15 school year on Monday, June 1, and most of the topics of discussion revolved around the upcoming end of the fiscal year.
