Tulane Medical Student learns the ropes from local physician

Christopher Mertens, currently a student at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, is using his summer break to participate in the Primary Care Rural Preceptorship Program and job shadowing Dr. Mark Shelton of Winnfield. Dr. Shelton is sharing valuable experience and expertise during the four-week rotation this summer.

Donations slow for Community Food Pantry

The Community Food Pantry in Winnfield might just be the largest continuous service project in Winn Parish. With over 50 volunteers and a weekly grocery giveaway, the Community Food Pantry feeds hundreds of people in the area every month.
It is truly an ecumenical endeavor, spearheaded by a consortium of at least twenty churches in the area. They are completely funded by donations from churches and the community.

Musuem looks for alternate revenue streams

Winnfield is home to many things to many people. A favorite person, place or thing (aren’t nouns fun?) that really make it stand out among other small towns in Louisiana. The largest hog-baying event in the world, the home of three governors and, of course, the site that ties it all together: The Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame.

Winnfield Senior High School Class of 1965 hosts 50 year reunion

The 57th Annual Winnfield High School Reunion filled the Winnfield Civic Center with eager graduates who spanned decades, and a touching tribute from the hosting class of 1965 ensured that everyone would leave with something to remember. The Class of 1965, celebrating their 50th, swaffed the stage with pine trees and Bayou-themed accouterment, with a “New Beginnings” theme set in the forest above the Bayou. That’s where the Tigers play, you know.

The Winn Parish PoliceJury met for their monthlyregular meeting on Monday,June 15, and the agenda pre-sented a standard by-the-num-bers meeting.Road Superintendent PerryHolmes was on hand to pre-sent a road update to the Jury,and he was pleased toannounce that the heavyspring rain has subsidedenough so that the road crewcould continue mowing grassand grading roads.

Now that the rain has (hopefully) subsided and given way to sunshine, Winn Parishyouth are taking advantage of the official start of summer by participating in several out-door activities. Pictured above are thirteen boys and girls who attended a two-day GolfCamp at the Pine Ridge Country Club in Winnfield last week. The classes, taught byTommy Harrell with assistance from Delane and Steve Adams, allowed for newcomers ofthe game to learn the rules and practice their swing. MeetingKathryn James, 2015 Winnfield Senior High graduate, was presented with the check forher Kiwanis Scholarship at the June 15, 2015 Kiwanis club meeting. She will be attendingLouisiana College. Her major is biology. Her goal is to be a radiologist which will requiremedical school. She will play softball at LC and her coach will be Lyn Bankston who sheplayed under at Winnfield Senior High School. James was the captain of the Tiger softballteam that went to state this year and came in second. She was also involved in a lot ofextracurricular activities and had a high GPA.
