6 Airlifted to Safety by La. Air National Guard

Two rescuers being tossed from their boat turned into six stranded citizens and first responders being airlifted out of Parker Long Road. On March 10 at about 12:37 p.m., the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report of two rescuers being tossed out of their boat on the Parker Long Road east of Winnfield.

Flooding Causes Devastating Damage in Winn Parish; Destroys 60+ Homes

A State of Emergency was declared in Winn Parish Wednesday, March 9 at 3:51 p.m. by the Clerk of Court in response to heavy thunderstorms that affected most of Louisiana. While there are some areas that Winn Parish first responders haven’t been able to access yet, the Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office estimates that more than 60 homes were damaged or destroyed by the rising water and flash flooding that occurred.

Police Jury Association Hosts First U.S. Senatorial Candidates Forum at Annual Convention

Shreveport, LA— The Police Jury Association hosted the first statewide US Senate Forum during its 92nd Annual State Convention in Shreveport on March 5th. The six candidates joined nearly 1,000 elected to share their vision and candidate platform. The PJAL represents all 64 parishes advocating for local government and parish issues at the state capitol and Washington DC.

Winn Casts Votes in 2016 Presidential Primary; Trump, Clinton Take Lead for State, Parish

Louisiana voters hit the polls Saturday to cast their votes in the 2016 Louisiana Presidential Primary election. Unofficial results named GOP frontrunner Donald Trump and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton the winners in their respective parties. Statewide, Donald Trump received 43 percent of the GOP primary vote, followed by Ted Cruz with 39 percent, Marco Rubio with 12 percent and John Kasich with 7 percent. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton led with 75 percent of the vote, and Bernie Sanders trailed behind with 25 percent.

Nineteen WMS Beta students participated in a number of competitions at the state level in Lafayette, La. Feb. 24-26. Seven students qualified to compete at the National leve, which will be held in June in New Orleans, La.

WMS Brothers Champions at Regional History Bee

Eight WMS students travelled to the Dunham School in Baton Rouge to participate in the Regional Finals of the National History Bee March 2. They qualified in January through an online test held at WMS. By the end of the night, three students qualified for nationals. Two of those were crowned champions of their divisions.

Dorothy Shell Celebrates 100 Years of Life in Winnfield

Dorothy Shell celebrated her birthday Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the same location where she was born 100 years earlier, in Winnfield, La. Miss Shell lived and worked as a teacher and then a home demonstration agent in Singer, Alexandria, Homer and Winnsboro before returning home after her retirement. She continues to live on her family’s property on Valley Street.

The 21st annual Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials are right around the corner as Winn Parish prepares to welcome more than 10,000 visitors. The biggest tourist attraction in Winn Parish, the trials will be March 16-20 at the Winn Parish Fairgrounds.

Atlanta Library Hour Turns Toward Healthy Snacking With LSU AgCenter

Students at Atlanta High School, grades pre-K through 4th, enjoyed spending their library time learning to rethink their snacks and drinks in an effort to live healthier lives. Shannan Chevallier, Nutrition Educator for the LSU AgCenter, educated students on the amount of sugar taken in when snacking on some of their favorite snack foods. They learned that the average American consumes at least 26 tsps. of sugar each day, totaling nearly four cups each week.

Chamber of Commerce Holds Banquet to Honor Business Service to Winn

Not even torrential downpour could stop the Winnfield Chamber of Commerce and Tourism from honoring local businesspersons and businesses for their commitment to service to the Winn community on Feb. 23. Four awards were presented: Winnfield Rotary Club was named Volunteer of the Year, Pat Flowers was named Businessperson of the Year, the Winnfield Animal Clinic was named Business of the Year, and First Methodist Church was awarded the Myrtis Allen Spirit Award.
