Winnfield Student Wins State In D.A.R.E. Essay Contest

Miss Emily Nevils, of Winnfield, participated in the D.A.R.E. essay competition for the 5th grade D.A.R.E. program. She not only came out with first in her class, but also out of all six 5th grade classes in Winnfield.

Her essay then went to the District competition, where she competed against 8 districts, and again coming out with 1st place. This is the third year in a row for a Winnfield Student to win at District level.

Florida Murder Suspect Arrested in Winnfield

Demetrius L Caesar, age 18, of Pensacola, FL was apprehended Saturday, July 21, by Winnfield Chief of Police Johnny Ray Carpenter. Caesar was wanted on a warrant from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office for Felony Murder While Engaged in the Commission of a Robbery.

Fire Dept. Reports 3 Structure Fires in Heated Temperatures

It was a busy weekend for the Winnfield Fire Department. Monday, July 23, 2018, Winnfield City Fire Department was dispatched to West Jones Street. During the heat of the day around 2:00 pm, firefighters approached a fully involved building.

The house was known to be abandoned, and there was no sign on any resident living at this location. A little over two hours later the fire was finally controlled, and eventually extinguished. Unfortunately nothing was left of the house, except some charred bricks and wood. From reliable sources, it was said that this was not the first time this place has been in flames.

Father, Grandmother Arrested for Negligent Homicide in Fatal Fire

The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal, with assistance from the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, has made two arrests in connection with a fatal fire in Campti that claimed the life of a 10- year-old boy.

Billy D. Adams Sr. of Natchitoches was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center Friday, July 27, 2018, on one count of Negligent Homicide in the fire-related death of his son Billy D. Adams, Jr. Adams, Sr.’s mother, Regina Vanzant has a warrant issued for her arrest on the same charge.

Winnfield Woman Charged with Fraud and Theft

A local woman of Winnfield, Nettie Adams, 31, has been arrested for allegedly going to businesses all over the state selling fake raffle tickets.

According to Rapides authorities, Adams had reportedly solicited a number of businesses and had acquired money, telling people that her daughter was undergoing cancer treatments out of state. She has been wanted not only in Winn Parish but also Rapides Parish as well.

Winnfield Shooter Turns Himself Over to Authorites

On Wednesday, July 18, around 9:00 am, Deontay Davis turned himself over to authorities for the shooting that occurred on Sunday July 15th. He was arrested and booked by the Winnfield City Police Department, being held at the Winnfield City Jail. He was charged with attempted Second- Degree murder per a warrant issued by Winnfield City Police, and has a bond set at $1,500,000.00. Davis has exercised his rights and has not made any statements concerning the incident of the shooting. This case will be turned over to the District Attorney for prosecution. No further information has been released at this time.

Women Arrested for Six Month Old’s Murder

At approximately 9:10 p.m  July 17, NPD received a 911 call in reference to a 6-monthold baby being taken from a residence in Mayberry Trailer Park.

Officers arrived and spoke with the mother of the child who advised that two unknown subjects came to her trailer and began beating on her door. She stated upon opening the door she was sprayed in the face with a substance she believed to be mace. She immediately fled the residence to get away from the attackers and upon circling back discovered the baby missing.

Suspect Wanted in Connection with Winnfield Shooting

A shooting was reported to Winnfield Police around 8:30 pm Sunday night. The shooting occurred between 2 individuals during an altercation at a residence in the 800 block of Moss Street. Kevin Wright, Jr., a 28-year-old male resident of Winnfield, was treated at the scene by paramedics then airlifted to Rapides Regional where he is listed in stable but critical condition.

Fresh Term for City Council and Mayor is Underway

The beginning of a new term of leadership has begun in Winnfield, for the new city council plus readministered members, plus our new Mayor.

The June monthly meeting was called to order by Mayor elect, George Moss, with the invocation to follow, led by Chief Montgomery, and the Pledge of Allegiance to our country’s flag. There were many in attendance, as far as public goes, for this first meeting of a new term of elected officials. As far as old business, action items, there were none on the agenda for this meeting.

Pea Patch Adds Eyecatching Artwork to Building

If you know that Thursday’s are chicken salad days, then you must be familiar with Winnfield’s little treasure, Pea Patch Gallery.

This gem is owned by Gail Shelton who purchased the building in 1991, opening the doors in 1992 after renovations. When the building was first operated, it was “Heard’s Hardware” which opened in 1908, making this building over 100 years old. Breard Carpenter owned it after that, in 1967, who opened “Winn Department Store”.
