Downtown Garage Sale May 7

The 2016 Downtown Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, May 7, beginning at 7AM. Spaces for set up are located Downtown in the large parking area between The Pea Patch and the Post Office. Some Downtown merchants will be set up in front of businesses.

School Board Tax Renewed 10 More Years

The Winn Parish School Board Additional Aids Tax will be renewed for 10 more years. The tax, a special tax for the purpose of providing additional support toward the expenses of the School Board, has been in effect for more than 40 years, and after winning by 341 votes in the April 9 election, it will remain in effect until the year 2026.

Kate Nevils: Winn Parish 8th Grade Student of the Year Goes Far

Katherine Nevils, Winn Parish 8th-grade Student of the Year, is headed to the Louisiana State Student of the Year competition – and she plans on winning. An 8th-grader at Winnfield Middle School, Katherine won first place in the 8thgrade division of the district competition where she was up against students from Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine, Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Desoto, Claiborne, Grant, Jackson, Lincoln, Union and Webster Parishes.

A fire broke out

A fire broke out in a vacant home at Front Street and South Ave. on April 7 at 4:47 p.m. The home was 60 percent involved upon arrival, according to the Winnfield Fire Department. The fire spread to an adjacent structure, and firefighters were able to put it out. At 1:34 a.m., the fire department responded to a call where the fire in the second home, which was also vacant, had reignited. There were signs of suspicious activity and the fire is under investigation.

Federal Data Show Louisiana Has Nation’s Widest Gap in Pay for Women

BATON ROUGE – Data compiled by the federal government show Louisiana has the nation’s largest gap in wages between women and men. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Louisiana is behind every state and the District of Columbia in gender wage disparity. The data show women in Louisiana earn an average of 65 cents for every dollar paid to men, a wage gap of 35 percent.

Three Sworn In To Winn Republican Parish Executive Committee

Three new members of the Winn Republican Parish Executive Committee were sworn in by District Judge Jacque Derr at a ceremony in the Winn Parish Courthouse today: J. Keith Gates, Samantha L. Kelly, and Matthew Walton. After Judge Derr administered the oath of office, the Committee’s first meeting came to order with Rev. Ricky Vines leading the Invocation and Luke and Alysa Kelly, ages 6 and 9 respectively, leading the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Winnfield Primary School Sticks It To Cancer

Cancer can be a sticky situation. That’s why students and faculty at Winnfield Primary School participated in a fundraiser benefitting the Winn Parish Relay for Life. March 21-23, WPS students and faculty members had the opportunity to purchase a sticker, chewing gum or a sucker for a $1 donation to Relay for Life.
