Invasive Species in Louisiana Water, Woods

There are several invasive species in Louisiana that many of us are familiar with. They would include the Chinese tallow trees, feral hogs, and giant salvinia. According to the Louisiana Wildlife Federation, “Millions of dollars are spent annually in our state to control invasive species and their impact on native species, recreational enjoyment and/or ecological balance.”

In October 2017 the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission voted to modify rules and regulations for approved Domestic Aquatic Organisms to include Sterlet sturgeon. This would allow non-native Sterlet sturgeon in Louisiana for aquaculture proposes including processing for meat and caviar.

Jordan Hill UPC Fishing Tourney Set for March 17

Jordan Hill U.P.C. is calling all fishermen and women, ages 4 and up, to join them on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at the St. Maurice Red River Midway Marina.

A Youth Tournament will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. for ages 4 – 12 years, and participating youth need only to bring a pole. Registration for the big tournament begins at 5:00 a.m., with the tournament beginning at safe daylight and ending at 3:00 p.m.

Mrs. Susie Lynn Ashley

Mrs. Susie Lynn Ashley, age 62 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018. Born Monday, January 17, 1955 in Winnfield, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her father, Melvin W. James. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 35 years, James Alvin Ashley; mother, Elouise Canerday James; sister, Vera Ables; niece, Sandy Ables Borland (Scott); and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Southern Funeral Home. Interment followed in Bethlehem Cemetery, in Calvin. Henry Bubba Hubbard

Henry Bubba Hubbard, 78, of Winnfield, Louisiana, passed away on January 17, 2018. Bubba grew up in Winn Parish where he spent his career as a logging contractor. “Hub” loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. Bubba’s personality allowed him to build relationships with most everyone that he met. He was a member of The Family Church where he loved connecting with others. Bubba was a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of Chatham Masonic Lodge #265. He was also a Barak Shriner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Etta Hubbard; Son, Tracy Glenn Hubbard; Grandson, Brenton Cole Hubbard; Stepson, Mark Randall Brewton; and Brother, James Eugene Hubbard.

Betty Bonnett Hyde Hutto

Mrs. Betty Bonnett Hyde Hutto, age 82 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at her residence. Born Tuesday, January 14, 1936 in Fort Necessity, Louisiana, she was a member of South Winnfield Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, flowers, vegetables and especially spending time with family and friends. Mrs. Hutto was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben Lee and Birdie B. Franks Bonnett; husband of 30 years, Dallas Ray Hyde, Sr. and husband of 20 years William “Bill” Hutto. Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Dallas Ray Hyde, Jr. and his wife Karen and Gary Hyde and wife Jessica; daughter, Debbie Porter and husband Thad; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Eula Miley, Ruby Cruse and Gaye Moore. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Southern Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Miller officiating. Interment followed in Bolton-Teagle Cemetery, in Winnfield.

Mrs. Bernice Taylor White

Mrs. Bernice Taylor White, age 86 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018. Born Thursday, January 29, 1931 in Brewton’s Mill, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Bertha Brewton Taylor; brothers, Willie, Roy, Albert and Huey Taylor; sister, Eunice Barnett; and son-in-law, Rev. Doyle McManus. Mrs. White was a founding member of Christian Fellowship Church in Winnfield. For 60 years, she was an active member and supporter of her husband’s ministry at various churches throughout Louisiana. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 70 years, Rev. Huey P. White; sons, Arville White (Nelda) and Darrell White (Evon); daughter, Judy McManus; 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Christian Fellowship Church, from 11:00 AM until time of services.

Mrs. Betty Ruth Smith

Mrs. Betty Ruth Smith, age 85 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Born Saturday, July 23, 1932 in Jena, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Roy L. and Viva Taylor Roark; husband, Meredith Smith; sister, Vera Smith; grandson, Raymand Lee Normand, Jr.; son-in-law, Raymand Lee Normand, Sr.; and nephews, Elbert McAllister and Rodney Smith. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and enjoyed crafting, embroidery, and sewing. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Sandra Normand Hansen (Ken) of Bossier City, LA., Judy McAllister (Jimmy), Winnfield, LA, and Melinda Stewart (Bo), Jonesboro, LA; son, Curtis Smith (Carolyn), Jonesville, LA; brothers, Dale Roark (Karen), NC, and Dwain Roark (Terrie), Cave City, AR; 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Columbia Resident Perishes In House Fire NFPA Offers Winter Fire Safety Tips

On December 22, 2017, a resident of neighboring Caldwell Parish perished in a house fire. As a result the Louisiana State Fire Marshal issued the following Press Release.

“Columbia, LA – State Fire Marshal investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding a deadly fire late Friday where a woman died.

Investigators responded to 349 Henry Martin Road in Columbia late Friday, December 22, after fire crews responded to a report of a residential structure fire shortly before 11:00 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters observed the home fully engulfed in flames. After entering the structure, firefighters found the body of 48-year-old Rebecca Dianne Baugh.

After being examined by investigators, the victim’s body was released to the Ouachita Parish coroner for autopsy. Preliminary findings indicate that Baugh died from smoke inhalation.
