Welcoming 2018, And Looking Back On 2017

As of press time, the weather that had been forecast for Winn Parish and the surrounding area on New Year’s Eve, may have found area residents celebrating in the warmth of their own homes. The projected high temperature for December 31st was 39 degrees, with a low of 20 degrees, along with precipitation. We were also expected to receive freezing drizzle on the first day of 2018, as part of what the National Weather Service is calling, “The Coldest Temperatures This Winter Season”.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 66% of American Adults said they be at home at midnight when 2018 arrived. Fourteen percent said they would be at a friend’s house, while five percent said they would be at a restaurant or bar.

Enroll In Nixle To Receive Emergency Alerts

Winn Parish residents now have access to a new emergency alert program called Nixle which sends alerts to cell phones to notify people of emergencies in our area as they happen. In order to receive alerts, persons must first sign up by text message.

2017 AllDistrict Team Announced

The 2017 All-District Team for District 3-2A was released last week, and the Winnfield Senior High School Tigers are proud to announce that 11 Tigers made the team.

Coach Lyn Bankston said, “Our district is well respected throughout the state and it was represented well in the playoffs.” He also stated, “It is an honor to be chosen because it represents players that are voted on by the other coaches in the district.

Jasmine Starks Graduates from Grambling

The parents of Jasmine Monique Starks (Morgan Perry and Sharon Starks) along with their family, wish to congratulate her for graduating with the Fall Commencement Class at Grambling State University. She received a Bachelor of Science degree and graduated Cum Laude.

Jasmine’s family is very proud of her persistence, determination and courage for achieving this accomplishment. She was persistent in no giving up when times became hard. She was determined in not accepting any “nos, ifs, and or buts”.

Winn Parish Students Attend National 4H Congress

Miss Betty Sue Southerland, age 83 of Winnfield, Louisiana went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 26, 2017. Present at her beside were her two loving sisters Barbara Marshall and Carol Melton. Bom January 6, 1934, in Port Barre, LA, she was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh Montgomery and Marjorie Thelma (Grimmett) Southerland; sister, Norma Jean Southerland; and brother, Jerry Hugh Southerland. Miss Southerland was a member of the Atlanta Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, mowing and hunting. She worked at Winnfield First Federal, Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office, Troy’s Supermarket, and the Mayor’s Office before retiring.

Barbara Jean Gresham

Mrs. Barbara Jean Gresham, age 62 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017. Born Friday, January 14, 1955 in Lafayette, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Louis A. Marks, Jr. and Rousella Miller Marks; and granddaughter, Cassidy Gresham. Mrs. Gresham was a member of the Gloryway Church. She enjoyed crafting and tole painting. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 47 years, Tommy Gresham; sons, Tommy Lee Gresham, Jr. (Sarah), Brandon Heath Gresham, and Bryan James Gresham; grandchildren, Marcus, Sadie, Elisabeth, Cameron, Mary Grace, Boston, Gabriel, and Scott; sisters, Brenda Marks and Connie Smith (Jerry). Funeral services were held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Southern Funeral Home with Rev. Ronny Taylor officiating. Interment followed in Atlanta Cemetery, in Atlanta.

Stephanie Kay Stipek

Ms. Stephanie Kay Stipek, age 30 of Atlanta, Louisiana passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017. Born Thursday, February 26, 1987 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, she was currently a CNA studying to obtain her RN degree. She was an animal lover, horseback rider, singer and loved the outdoors and most of all, spending time with her family. Stephanie was preceded in death by her grandparents, Dale and Ruby Stipek, Eunice Stipek and Michael Tuzzolino. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving daughter, Jaiden Stipek; parents, Joe and Kathy Stipek; brother, Joey Stipek (Tuesdi); and nephew, Jasper Stipek. Mrs. Darcey Ann Orr, age 77 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2017. Born Wednesday, March 13, 1940 in Winnfield, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Iona Kelly Varnell; grandson, Joseph Max Orr; and brother, \John W. Varnell. Mrs. Orr was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church and enjoyed reading her Bible daily. She worked at Calvin High School and was a substitute teacher. Mrs. Orr enjoyed sewing and spending time with her grandchildren and family. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 61 years, George M. Orr, Winnfield, LA; son, George Orr, Jr.

Mr. James O. Jurek, age 82 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. Born Saturday, January 12, 1935 in Cuero, Texas, he was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Belle Hull Jurek; and wife, Priscilla Jurek. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Sue Duplantis (Steve), Thibodaux, LA; sons, Chuck Jurek, Winnfield, LA, Troy Jurek (Sharona), Winnfield, LA, and Johnny Jurek (Crissy), Thibodaux, LA; 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and 2 sisters. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Southern Funeral Home with Rev. Steven Smithson officiating. Interment followed in Garden of Memories, in Winnfield.
