Dr. Bill Gaddis speaks to Kiwanis Club

Dr. Bill Gaddis, Secretary-Treasurer, of the Winnfield Kiwanis club shared his report of the Kiwanis International Convention that was held in Paris, France in July, 2017. He shared a slide show of pictures taken on the trip and at the convention. He and his wife Jackie also toured Aix en Provence on a side tour with other Kiwanians from around the world.

Kiwanis International is the 3rd largest civic club in the world. There are 106 employees at Kiwanis International headquarters in Indianapolis. There are 17 employees at the Kiwanis Foundation. Fourteen different languages are spoken at the International headquarters.

Mr. and Mrs. John F. Lovell IV of Winnfield, Louisiana, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Savannah Lea, to Walker Matthew Thurmon, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Troy Thurmon of Monroe, Louisiana.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Lovell III of Winnfield, Mr. and Mrs. Quinton Arnold of Baton Rouge, the late Mrs. Joyce Arnold, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Davies, of Winnfield, Louisiana.

Joy Nell Walker Rogers

Joy Nell Walker Rogers, age 82 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, February 1st, 2018. Mrs. Rogers was born on June 17, 1935 in Memphis, TN and was lovingly adopted into the union of William Dewey Walker and Arvilla Greene Walker. Joy spent the majority of her life in Winnfield, LA and in 1968 married Roland Rogers. Roland and Joy were married for 47 years until his passing in January 2016. Joy was a stay at home mother to her children for many years until 1985, when she was employed by the Winn Parish School Board in Special Education for 20 years until her retirement in 2005. Joy loved helping children and served in a variety of roles throughout the parish school system. Joy enjoyed cooking, walking, traveling, and spending time with her family, friends, children, grandchildren, and her many pets over the years. She was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and could always be found watching them play on Sundays in the Fall.

Raymond Samuel Newman

Mr. Raymond Samuel Newman, age 83 of Dermott, Arkansas passed away on Monday, January 29, 2018. Born Sunday, September 23, 1934 in Saint Joseph, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his parents, Floy Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Tatum Newman; daughter, Mary Newman; and brothers, J. W., Eugene, and Floyd Newman. Mr. Newman grew up in Newellton, LA, where he graduated from Newellton High School. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Dermott, AR. He received a bachelor’s in education from U.A. Monticello, AR, and a master’s degree from ULM in Monroe, LA. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 16 years. He also was a teacher, principal, and superintendent at various school districts across south Arkansas, and later retired from Caddo Hills School District. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Frances G.

Julia Faye Green

Mrs. Julia Faye Green, age 78 of Georgetown, Louisiana passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018. Born Monday, January 29, 1940 in Winnfield, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her father, Julian “Mack” McCartney; mother, Mary Inez Strange McCartney; husband, Donnis A. Green; and brotherin- law, Thomas L. Roberts. Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Mary Roberts, sister-in-law, Gloria Barrett (Joe); nephew, Jack Barrett and niece, Susie Lucky. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Lamar Carpenter and Rev. Joe Bruce officiating. Interment followed in Beulah Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. Serving the family as pallbearers were Mike Roberts, Richie King, Jack Barrett, Joel Bruce, Johnny Hodges, and Richard Maxwell. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Barrett, Colby Barrett, and W. C. Hollaway.

Home going Services will be held Saturday February 10, 2018 at Corner Stone Baptist Church 5415 Matlock Rd, Arlington, TX 76018 at 1pm. Viewing will be held at church from 11:30 until 12:30pm. Wake will be held Friday February 9, 2018 from 6pm-8pm at Prestige Mortuary 404 E. Broad St. Mansfield, Texas. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters Kail Pikes, Winnfield, LA., Kerry Bickham, Mansfield, Tx., Katherine Floyd, Mansfield, Tx, Kathy Brown, Monroe, LA, Earlean Dobson, Mansfield, TX. Her sons, Earl Funches Jr. Fort Worth Tx. and Denny Calvin, Winnfield La. Sisters Idamer George, Mansfield Tx and Yolanda Weaver, LaPlace, LA and brother Dexter Hussan Metarie LA.

Weather Changes The Look of Winn Parish And Brings Warning From State Fire Marshal

Amid a spike of fire-related deaths, and with several more weeks of freezing, frigid temperatures in the forecast,the Office of Louisiana State Fire Marshal issued the following news release on January 17th.

While Louisiana endures a second round of bitter, record-breaking cold weather in as many weeks, state officials from the Governor’s Office to the State Fire Marshal’s Office are encouraging everyone to remain vigilant in maintaining safety while staying warm.

Krewe Of Kingfish Brings A Soiree In The Swamp To Winnfield

The Winn Parish School Board met on January 8, 2018 and started the new year with electing a new School Board President and Vice President.

School Board Member Durane Johnson gave the invocation, and School Board Member Matt Walton led those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Only two School Board Members were not in attendance at the meeting. Those not present included Ms. Sarah McCoy and Ms. Leah Clingan.
