Morris Lee “Mac” McManus

Mr. Morris Lee “Mac” McManus, age 77 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away at his residence surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 21, 2019.

Born Saturday, January 24, 1942 in Verda, Louisiana, he, along with his wife owned and operated McManus Grocery and Meat Market in Joyce for 15 years. He fought in the Vietnam War where he was wounded in combat and awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. McManus was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Avis Thomason McManus; grandchild, Dorian Fowler; great-grandchild, Joplin Rain Mitchell; siblings, Mona Ann Kingston and Gerald McManus.

Sparky Stevenson

Sparky Stevenson, age 60, passed away March 13, 2019 after a lengthy illness. Born in Winnfield on Friday, November 14, 1958, Sparky was a long-time resident of Winnfield, graduating from Winn Academy in 1977. Sparky moved to Monroe and worked at Manville paper plant for 15 years plus, before going to school to become a crane operator and working in construction. Sparky was a cancer survivor for many years and upon retiring spent his time fishing, traveling, and enjoying family.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Harry and Gladys Stevenson; brother, Richard Stevenson; and sisters, Nelda Carter and Debbie Smith.

Gerald Ronald Powell

Mr. Gerald Ronald Powell, age 71 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019.

Mr. Powell attended The Family Church and was a retired ironworker who was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening and tending to his livestock. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather.

Born Thursday, September 4, 1947 in Jonesboro, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Powell, his mother, Lora Robinson Powell; brother, Sammie Powell; grandson, William Powell.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sheila Powell; children, Andy Prine, Chris Powell (Mandi), Brandi Powell (Billy) and Cody Powell (Traci); grandchildren, Hailey, Camden, Kaden, Dalton, Alexa, Corbin, Lathon, Carter and Adalyn; sister, Sue Holman (Roger).

Jerline Sarah Creel Jordan

Mrs. Jerline Sarah Creel Jordan, age 86 of Dodson, Louisiana passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.

Born Sunday, November 20, 1932 in Joyce, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Gerusha Cockerham Creel and Frank Creel; her husband, John Jordan; infant daughter, Julie Ann Jordan; and brothers, Aaron, Dewey, Silas, Ivy, John, Cortez, Hezzie and Julian Creel; sisters, Ruby Rajcan and Myrtle Gregory.

Mrs. Jordan was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church. She, along with her husband, owned and operated Jordan Egg Farm for 50 years.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Cindy Shields (Joe), Dodson, LA; son, Jason Jordan (Sarah), Dodson, LA; grandchildren, Caleb Shields, Rachel Shields and fiancé James, Sarah Murphy (Jacob), Julie Jordan, and Jonathan Jordan; and great grandson, Walt W. Murphy.

Charles Sherman “Goob” Carpenter

Charles “Goob” Carpenter, also known sometimes as the “Mayor of Goobville” age 75 of Calvin, Louisiana passed away, Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at his residence after a long illness.

Mr. Carpenter loved hunting deer, fishing, and spending time at his camp. He loved spending time with family and friends but more than anything loved “Diggin Taters” with the grandchildren. He was the son of the late Sherman Carpenter and the late Grace Palmer Caskey and was also preceded in death by his uncles Pat Palmer, and Ferrell Jarnagin, brother in law Gerald Bryant and close friends Tracy Carpenter and Bud Carter.

Dorothy Janice Sutton Harston

Mrs. Dorothy Janice Sutton Harston, age 80 of Goldonna, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019.

Born Tuesday, November 8, 1938 in Winnfield, Louisiana, she was an avid gardener and was retired from Calvin High School as cafeteria worker.

Mrs. Harston was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Luther Sutton and Marie Gorham Sutton; husband, James Harston; son, James Douglas Harston; brother, Richard Sutton;

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Billy Harston (Denise); siblings, Neva Darling, Betty “Patty” Moore, Patricia “Tisha” Godwin and Frank Sutton; special cousin, Maxine Ferguson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM on Monday, March 18, 2019 at Southern Funeral Home with Bro. Steve Bartlett officiating. Interment followed in Bethlehem Cemetery, in Calvin.

Betty Faith Wagoner Howell

Mrs. Betty Faith Wagoner Howell, age 90 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.

Born Tuesday, October 16, 1928 in Winnfield, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Ida Hendrix Wagoner and Marion E. Wagoner; husband, D. M. Howell, Jr.; great grandson, Tristan Howell; daughter-in-law, Tami Howell; and siblings M. Fulton Wagoner, Francille Jordan, Eunice Whisonant, Juanita Eagles, Richard L. Wagoner, and Thomas N. Wagoner.

Betty was a homemaker, and that is her legacy. She made a home where her three boys could grow and thrive. That home was a safe, nurturing, loving place for those boys and later for their children and grandchildren. It was a home that was built on the firm foundation of her faith and maintained by her unconditional love.

Betty loved cooking for family and friends, always ready for a fish fry. She loved flowers, working in her yard, and “front porch sitting” with her friends.

Patricia Diane Dentici

Ms. Patricia Diane Dentici, age 68 of Weatherford, Texas passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

Diane was the most loving, unselfish person you could meet. She would help others to her own detriment. She saved many people’s lives as a nurse and nurse practitioner. Diane was greatly admired in Ft. Worth where she was a nurse and nursing administrator. She received her RN at Cameron University in Lawton, OK; her BSN at Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, TX; and her nurse practitioner degree at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. Diane worked in all fields of nursing: school nurse, floor nurse, charge nurse, nurse administrator; here in Winnfield she served as a home health nurse as well as a nursing instructor at Huey P. Long Vocational-Technical School. At the time of her death she was residing in Weatherford, TX.

Goldie Faye Wise Shows

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Goldie Faye Wise Shows, our loving and devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She passed through Heaven’s gates on March 9, 2019. On this same day she spent doing exactly what she loved-a fish fry with plenty of friends and family to love on her. Mrs. Shows was reunited with loved ones in Heaven including her parents Tom Wise and Ona Simons Wise, her husband James Ernest Shows, and her son James Dalton Shows.

From Heaven she will be watching her sons; Michael Shows and James Darren Shows; her daughters Fae S. Sanders, Sandra S. Jones, Tonya S. Fletcher, and Nancy S. Hyde; 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her siblings, John P Wise, Gerald Wise, Charles Wise, and Barney Wise; her sisters Betty Joe Deen and Gerlene Jowers; and other special loved ones; Julia McLain, Pat James, John and Mindy Wise, Isa Arnold, and many numerous others.

Mr. Marvin Ray Folden, age 63 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

Born Thursday, September 8, 1955 in Monroe, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his parents, Carlie Ray Folden and Marilyn Shows Folden; wife, Ruth Thompson Folden; brothers, Jimmy Dale Folden and Thomas Harry Folden.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Amy Jennings and husband Brandon of Calvin, Stacy Creel and husband Matt of Winnfield, Christy King and husband Buddy of Dodson; son, Donnie Folden of Winnfield; grandchildren, Brooklyn Jennings, Casey Creel, Maci Creel, Ally Jennings, Nathan Folden, BJ King, and Cody King; siblings, Brenda Wright and Hank Folden and wife Debra of Winnfield; sister-in-law, Becky Folden of Winnfield.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 8, 2019 at Southern Funeral Home with Rev. Arthur Robinson and Rev. Lamar Carpenter officiating. Interment followed in Corinth Cemetery in Jordan Hill.
