Lady Cougars Rebound

Article Image Alt Text

Kasey Bevill

After losing several key players and their head coach off last year’s state qualifying softball team, most people considered this a rebuilding year for the Lady Cougars. The list of doubters did not include the team. With no player beyond the 10th grade, the girl’s young softball team is currently ranked #1 in the state Class C division with a 13–3 record.

Ryan Chappell, a director of PILOTS FOR PATIENTS, spoke to the Kiwanis club, Monday March 12th. PILOTS FOR PATIENTS was started in 2008 by Phillip Thomas. Their mission is to assist those in need of air transportation for medical purposes. The goal is to eliminate the burden of travel and to let the patient concentrate on getting better. The program is completely free of charge to qualified patients. The pilots whether they own their plane or have to rent a plane are not allowed to accept any money per FFA regulations. As of March 5th there have been 3841 missions. They fly into the smaller airports in these large cities for safety sake and less air space congestion. Most flights are to MD Anderson in Houston but they also go to St. Jude, The Texas Christian Children’s Hospital and others as needed. Usually the flights are limited to 300 – 350 miles but longer flights may be available. Patients must be ambulatory and medically stable.

Winnfield Kiwanis Club Hears About Hog Dog Trials

Article Image Alt Text

Deano Thornton, representative from the Kiwanis club to the Hog Dog Trials Board, gave a history of the Hog Dog Trials. They began in 1995 as a way to honor Earl Long’s 100th birthday. The idea began with Claude L. O’Bryan and was a Saturday only event the first year. After several years and some conflict a year was missed. The next year the Hog Dog Trials was restarted with the civic clubs having ownership. Each civic club has a representative on the board. Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials were trademarked so that they could not be taken out of Winn Parish.
