Kurt Damien Guidry

Kurt Damien Guidry entered eternal rest on Friday, October 4, 2019 at 25 years old. He was born on April 7, 1994 in Lafayette, Louisiana. Kurt attended Montgomery High School for most of his high school career and then enrolled himself into the Youth Challenge Program where he graduated as a five star cadet. Kurt took extreme pride in his job as a boilermaker; he truly loved what he did. Kurt was known for his quick wit, infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit. When Kurt wasn’t at work he was spending time with his family and friends; he was a devoted father - that lived for his children, an avid fisherman, a master griller, and champion selfie-taker.

Kurt was preceded in death by his aunt Christal Reeves and maternal step-grandmother Arlien Owens.

Eselle Donald Parker Jr.

Mr. Parker is the son of the late Eselle Donald Parker Sr. and the late Willie Orelle Rolen Parker. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Donna Kaye Parker, sister Kathy Parker Long, and brothers Marcus and Larson Parker. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Charlotte Shepard Parker, children Julie Parker Hanson (Curt) and Thomas Lane Parker (Donna), grandchildren Megan O’Neal (Nick), Ashley Parker, Andrew Parker, Elizabeth Parker, Whitney Bass, Jacob Parker, Logan Bass, Emma Bass, Seth Shirley (Brittany), Adam Shirley, Madisyn Hubbard, Victoria Hubbard, Caleb Hanson, and Madison Hanson as well as one great grandson Brantley Case Ingles. Mr. Parker is also survived by his brothers Troyce Parker and Robin Parker.

Memorial Services for “Jr.” were held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 13, 2019 in the Chapel of Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield. Friends visited with the family in the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until time of services.

Glenda Faye King Griffin

Mrs. Glenda Faye King Griffin, age 74 of Monroe, Louisiana, passed away Sunday, October 13, 2019, at her residence. She was born in LaSalle Parish on January 14, 1945 to H.H. and Lessie Cotton King.

Though she had moved to Monroe, she remained a member of Big Creek Baptist Church in Jordan Hill, where she loved her church family. She and her late husband, Charlie Griffin, lived in Winn Parish for the entirety of their marriage where they operated several businesses. She enjoyed reading, sewing and spoiling her dog, Stormi.

Mrs. Griffin is preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and J.W. Arnold and her husband, Charlie Griffin.

Christopher Gerald Vines

Mr. Christopher Gerald Vines, age 38 of Baton Rouge, Louisiana passed away on Friday, September 27, 2019.

Born Monday, December 1, 1980 in Natchitoches, Louisiana, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, A. C. Hinds and Carlene Weeks Williams, Great Grandparents, M. C. and Thelma Mann and Dennis and Bertha Weeks.

Mr. Vines was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, having completed three tours in Afghanistan. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, and spending time with his sons.

Those left to cherish his memory include his sons, Christopher Vines, Jr., Dylan Vines, Zachary Vines and Xavier Vines; mother, Sharon Foster (Dale); father, Victor Vines (Jennifer); siblings, Joseph Vines, Cassie Parker, Shauni Lytle, David Vines and Alyssa Vines; paternal grandparents, Claude and Mitzi Vines, aunts, Rebecca Vines and Lisa Iness; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

GERALD M. ‘JERRY’ GREGOREK

Dr. Gerald M. “Jerry” Gregorek made his last final approach and landing surrounded by family and friends Oct. 3, 2019.

He is survived by his wife, M. L. Carol (nee, Procell); daughters, Jean, Susan (David Schweibinz) and Leighanna (Jake DeRouen); brother, Robert Gregorek; sister, Michaelene George (Richard); and many devoted nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, David Michael.

“Dr. G” was a student and faculty member of the Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at Ohio State University for over 66 years. He was an inspiration to his students as a teacher and innovative researcher of aerodynamics, aircraft flight-test and airfoil design, and high-speed vehicle design - always motivating and encouraging his beloved students.

Mrs. Era Louise Smart, age 89 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away Friday, October 4, 2019 at Autumn Leaves Nursing Home in Winnfield.

Mrs. Smart was a native of Winnfield and a member of the Sardis Baptist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Granvell Frasier and the late Ruby Jackson Frasier and was also preceded in death by her husband Richard Smart.

Mrs. Smart leaves to cherish her memory four sons Tim Smart, Claude Smart (Phyllis), Wayne Smart (Terry), Larry Smart (Birgit) as well as ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

William Dan “Bill” Files Jr.

Mr. William Dan “Bill” Files Jr., age 81 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019 at Winn Parish Medical Center. Mr. Files is the son of the late William Dan Files Sr. and the late Ethelyn Gurney Files. He was also preceded in death by his wife Bettye Will Larche Files.

Bill was born and raised in Bastrop, Louisiana where he graduated from Bastrop High School. He later graduated from Louisiana Tech University School of Forestry. He married his high school sweetheart Bettye Will Larche Files December 28th, 1962.

They moved to Winnfield in 1968 and founded Files Timber Company in 1970. He was a charter member of Winn Parish Ducks Unlimited and National Trustee Emeritus. Mr. Files was a former President of Winnfield Chapter of Rotary Club International. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid LSU sports fan. Most of all, he will be remembered for hosting friends and family at his second home, “The Lonely Teal”.

Larry Warren Baker

Larry Warren Baker,

Mr. Larry Warren Baker, 79, a resident of Abbeville, La. and native of Temple City, Calif. passed away peacefully at Lafayette Regional Medical Center on Monday, Sept. 30 surrounded by loved ones.

Larry was an avid and loyal Saints and LSU fan who also enjoyed woodworking, travelling and spending time with his family. He especially loved attending family get-togethers, going antiquing with his daughters and spending time at home with his wife and their Sphinx cat, Spirit. He also reigned as King Rotary XXXII of the St. Martinville Rotary Club Mardi Gras Ball.

Larry was passionate about caring for the elderly. He worked for many years as a nursing home administrator, serving two years as an officer for the Louisiana Nursing Home Association. For the past 20 years, he has been the director of programs and personnel for the Lafayette Council on Aging, working right up until his illness no longer allowed him to do so.

Mrs. Elizabeth “Beth” Wright, age 76 of Bossier City, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 14, 2019. Those left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, Harold D. Wright; daughter, Dawn Godrey (Keith); son, Mark Ponder (Vicki); daughter, Lori Wright; son, Wes Wright (Ashley); son, Wade Wright (Lisa); 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sister, Mary Wilbanks (Benny); brother, Sammy Johns (Sandra); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Craig Ponder; parents, James Walter and Mary Maude (Rolen) Johns; 4 brothers; 1 sister.

Friends visited with the family Thursday, September 19, 2019 in the chapel of Edmonds Funeral Home from 10:30AM until time of service. Funeral services began at 11:00AM Thursday, September 19, 2019 with Reverend Howard Hall officiating. Interment was in Gayla Traina Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mary Alice Bartley Mercer, age 85 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Born Thursday, September 13, 1934 in Winnfield, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Bartley and Merttie Barber Bartley; husband, Lloyd H. Mercer; brothers, Walter Bartley, Dennis Bartley, G.W. Bartley and James Bartley; grandson, Travis Mercer.

Mrs. Mercer will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed cooking, quilting, fishing and shooting her shotgun.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Bobby Mercer, Patsy Mercer and Michael Mercer (Patricia); five grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; sister, Melba Bartley.

Funeral services was held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Southern Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Bartley and Rev. Willie Beaubouef officiating. Interment followed in Jordan Hill Cemetery.
