Don Wayland Slater

Mr. Don Wayland Slater, age 74 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016. Born Sunday, November 23, 1941 in Olney, Illinois, he was a US Army veteran and was retired from the petroleum industry. He also had a Bachelor’s degree in history and was a teacher and lay-speaker. Mr. Slater was preceded in death by his Parents, Clarence and Kathryn Harwell Slater. Those left to cherish his memory include his Wife, Marilyn Osborne Slater; Sons, Wayland L. Slater and Jay E. Slater and wife Vickie (Betts); Daughter, Kathryn Slater; Grandchildren, Jessika, Kacie, Elizabeth, Brandon, Shelby and Thomas. Graveside funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Monday, May 2, 2016 at Bethlehem Cemetery of Calvin with Rev. Brian McAllister officiating. Interment followed under the direction of Southern Funeral Home, Winnfield. Serving the family as pallbearers were Jay Slater, Chris Carey, Heath Clark, and Brandon Jones.

Sherry Lynn Collins

Mrs. Sherry Lynn Collins, age 42 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2016. Born Wednesday, July 18, 1973 in Morgantown, West Virginia, she was preceded in death by her brother, Scotty Anderson and infant son, Benjamin Daniel Collins. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Doug Collins, Winnfield, LA; parents, William Eugene “Pete” Anderson, Calvin and Mary Emma Jones Anderson, Calvin, LA; son, Ryan Anderson, Calvin, LA; daughters, Rachel Procell and husband Brandon, Natchitoches, LA and Julia Collins, Winnfield, LA; sister, Christie McCandless and husband Brad, Calvin, LA; nephew, Michael Anderson, Calvin, LA; and numerous other family, friends and loved ones. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Calvin with the Reverends Donald Rudd and Joseph White officiating. Interment followed in Sardis Cemetery, in Atlanta.

Mr. Earl Lloyd Frederick, Jr., age 54 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Born Thursday, January 25, 1962 in Winnfield, Louisiana, he was a member of The Family Church of Winnfield. He was a graduate of Northwestern State University and was employed at Weyerhaeuser for more than 21 years. He loved the outdoors, especially dirt bikes, but more than anything, loved being with his family. Mr. Frederick was preceded in death by his Father, Earl Lloyd Frederick, Sr. Those left to cherish his memory include his Wife, Michelle Conkling Frederick; Children, Earl Lloyd “Trey” Frederick, III, Joshua Frederick (Nicole), Magen Lindsey Frederick and Hollie Shay Frederick; Mother, Margaret Vierra Guilliams; Grandchildren, Kynzie Frederick, Paisley Frederick, Kylie Frederick, Kayden Frederick, Kimber Frederick, Taylan Lindsey and Landrie Frederick; Brothers, Keith Frederick (Jennifer), Shane Frederick (Lori), Chad Frederick (Ashley) and Greg Guilliams.

Eaphren “Neal” Shackelford

Funeral services for Mr. Eaphren “Neal” Shackelford, age 79, were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2016 at the Haynesville United Pentecostal Church, with Bro. Gary Taylor, Bro. Dale Welch and Andrew Abshire officiating. Burial followed in the Shady Grove Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Haynesville, LA. Mr. Shackelford was born on October 2, 1936 to Caleb Bethel and Thelma Ruth Shepard Shackelford in Plain Dealing, LA and passed away Friday, March 25, 2016 at his home in Haynesville. He was a faithful member of the Haynesville United Pentecostal Church and was caretaker of his beloved church. He was a retired worker in the oil industry and was a truck driver. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mrs. Nellie Faye Jordan, age 75 of Sikes, Louisiana passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2016. Born Thursday, September 12, 1940 in Winnfield, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Frances Grice Pinder. Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Michael Jordan and wife Cathy, Choudrant, LA, Ricky Jordan and wife Sheila, Sikes, LA, and Terry Jordan and wife Deidra, Sikes, LA; brother, Jessie Pinder and wife Susan, West Monroe, LA; sister, Susan Elliot and husband Billy, Clarks, LA; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Southern Funeral Home with Rev. Hudey Beauboef officiating. Interment followed in Hurricane Grove Cemetery, in Sikes. John Malcolm Grider

Mr. John Malcolm Grider, age 53 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016. Born Friday, September 21, 1962 in Fresno, California , he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Vivian Hill Day and John Reeves Day; paternal grandparents, Frank Grider and Opal Elkins; and father-in-law, Edgar Lee Gibson. John started his teaching career at Winnfield Middle School teaching social studies and science. He then transferred to Sikes High School and taught there until it closed. Mr. Grider then transferred back to WMS and became Assistant Principal. He retired in 2015. In his time as an educator, he served as coach, friend to coworkers, Emcee, and eventually became “The Voice of the Tigers.” Most importantly, he will be remembered as an enthusiastic mentor to all students.
