November 18 Election Reminders

Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin reminds voters that Saturday, Nov. 18, is Election Day for the General Election.

In preparation for the election, Secretary Ardoin encourages voters to remember: (1) The deadline for a registrar of voters to receive a voted absentee ballot is Nov. 17 by 4:30 p.m. (other than military and overseas voters).

(2) Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on Election Day. Anyone in line at 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

(3) Voters can find their polling location and sample ballot by downloading the GeauxVote Mobile app for smartphones, or by visiting www.GeauxVote.com and logging into the Voter Portal.

(4) Voters can sign up for electronic notifications via GeauxVote Mobile.

WYBL Basketball Kicks Off

Recreation Director Anthony Hall along with the City of Winnfield Recreation Department has begun registration for its annual youth basketball program. Registration begins on Monday, November 6th and will run through Friday, December 15. Regular registration fee for this league is $40.00. Boys and girls ages 4-15 are eligible for this exciting program. Don’t let this deadline pass you by. Sign your child up today. Late registration will begin on Monday, December 11. and conclude on Friday, December 15.

There will be a $10.00 late fee assessed on each application received during this period. Mandatory tryouts will be held on Saturday, December 16. The times for each age group will be released in the Winn Parish Enterprise on Wednesday, December 13.

For more information concerning WYBL Youth Basketball, contact the Recreation Dept at 628-0246. Everyone is encouraged to come out and participate and have an exciting “YEAR PLAYING BASKETBALL”.

On October 30, 2023, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church hosted a Pastor Appreciation Supper honoring the pastors of Winn Parish. Reverend Louis Sklar welcomed the pastors and their wives. The gathering enjoyed an evening of fellowship. Following the delicious meal, each pastor shared his story of how the Lord led him to Jesus’ service in Winn Parish. Before the guests departed each pastor received a thank you gift. It was a blessed evening shared by people of all faiths!

The weather was perfect for the Fall Festival in Winnfield on Oct 31. It was an evening of fellowship, lots of candy, laughs and some amazing costumes. More pictures are on page 4.

Gov. John Bel Edwards has announced a new statewide collaboration among LSU, LCMC Health, Louisiana Cancer Research Center and Tulane to accelerate the attainment of the first National Cancer Institutedesignated cancer center in Louisiana. This effort is resulting in the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center, which will work with partner institutions at Tulane University, Xavier University and Ochsner to promote education and conduct research in the diagnosis, detection and treatment of cancer, while pursuing a National Cancer Institute designation.

DART hosted their annual candlelight vigil on Oct 25 at Winnfield 1st Assembly of God Church in Winnfield. It was a time to honor and remember victims of domestic violence in not only Winn Parish, but all of the parishes that DART provides services to. The agency has been active in Winn since 2012 and has served many clients over the years. Their services include legal advocacy, shelter, safe planning, advocacy, community education and counseling.

This year Ms. Annie Goods was welcomed as the new DART advocate for Winn Parish. Having been an active member in the community for many, many years, Ms. Annie has already reached deep into the rural areas of the parish to offer her services.

On October 17 Kiwanian Jason Tarver spoke to the club on Financial scams on Seniors. He informed the club members the most popular scam at the moment is the romance scam. The scammer targets seniors that have lost a spouse and are vulnerable at the moment. Some of the other popular scams are government impersonation, sweepstakes and lottery scams, robocalls and phone scams, computer tech support scams and the grandparent scam.

On October 24 guest speaker Mike Smith spoke to the club on the way his family business got started. He said he grew up around people. His mother owned a business at home. So he had been around business all his life. He told reminded us of the drive in He spoke of PK Smith Chevrolet and said the business was fixing to turn 50 years old. He also spoke a little on the automobile industry.

Twenty-five members of Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma enjoyed a great fall evening on October 24, 2023. Members painted pumpkins under the direction of Cyndi Loftin Beaubouef. The educators are shown here proudly displaying the results.

Early Voting will be held in the Registrar of Voters office in the Winn Parish Courthouse Friday, November 3 through Saturday, November 11 (closed Sunday, November 5 AND Friday, November 10) from 8:30 AM until 6:00 PM. Enter through the Main Street entrance. The election will be Saturday, November 18.

Sample ballots are also posted on the wall outside the Registrar of Voters Office.

Mayor Hamms Proclaims Oct 2227 Red Ribbon Week

Not only did Mr. Steve Shelton win the Businessman of the Year Award at this years Winn Chamber of Commerce Banquet, he was presented the award by his wife, Mrs. Gail Shelton. Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners.

The City of Winnfield has joined with teachers, administrators, and City and State Officials in encouraging youth to become productive citizens and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The proclamation further states that the City of Winnfield, Office of the Mayor, is committed to nurturing the full potential of Louisiana youth.

Gerald Hamms, Mayor of Winnfield, signed this proclamation on October 20, 2023.

Red Ribbon Week is celebrated annually. Red Ribbon Week highlights the importance of living a drug-free life. It presents an opportunity for parents, educators, and communities to reinforce the drug-free messages they share with their children throughout the year.
