NSULA Educators Rising Speaks to Winn Parish Students

NSULA Educators Rising recently spoke to the Winnfield Senior High School Educators Rising class. Kristen Walker shared information with the students about NSU, Educators Rising, and the NSU School of Education.

Katherine Nevils, of Winnfield, LA, was named to the University of Mississippi’s Fall 2023 Honor Roll lists.

Nevils, majoring in Biomedical Engineering, was named to the Chancellor’s Honor Roll, which is reserved for students who earn a semester GPA of 3.75-4.00.

“The remarkable students achieving Chancellor’s Honor Roll are among the best and brightest at the University of Mississippi,” said Chancellor Glenn Boyce. “I commend them for their hard work and dedication resulting in their outstanding academic achievements and this well-deserved recognition.”

In order to be eligible for honor roll designation, a student must have completed at least 12 graded hours for the semester and may not be on academic probation during the semester.

LSP Troopers Safely Recover Two Florida AMBER Alert Victims

On January 26, Troop F Troopers received information from Lake County Sheriff ’s Office in Florida regarding an active AMBER Alert involving two missing children. The missing children were reported to be traveling westbound on I-20. At approximately 12:13 p.m., Troopers initiated a traffic stop on a silver Nissan Rogue, which matched the description listed in the AMBER Alert. The Nissan came to a brief stop on I-20 westbound, just east of LA-145, before fleeing the scene.

Troopers and Lincoln Parish Sheriff ’s Deputies briefly pursued the Nissan before a tire deflation device was successfully deployed. The driver, later identified as 41-year-old Dixie Williams, came to a stop and was taken into custody without incident. Once the vehicle was stopped, Troopers safely recovered the missing children from the AMBER Alert, a one-year-old female and a five-yearold female.

Winn Parish Enterprise Visits Dodson High School 10th Grade Class

Casey Tolar’s 10th grade class Dodson High School had lots of questions about what it’s like to work at a newspaper and how to conduct interviews. The class participation was great and enthusiastic as the Editor of Winn Parish Enterprise, Stacey Kaiser, spent time explaining the process of interviewing and writing articles for the newspaper. She gave her thoughts on the steps of planning to conduct an interview and the process of putting it all together for the readers. Students had lots of interesting questions and were eager to know the process.

The Krewe of Kingfish invites you to participate in their annual Mardi Gras Parade. It will be held on Feb 3, 2024 at 2:00pm. Lineup will begin at 12:00pm at Earl K Long Park. Judging will begin at 1:30pm.

This years Grand Marshal will be Mayor Gerald Hamms.

WPSO Assists JPSO After Receiving 911 Call

The Winn Parish Sheriff ’s Office received a 911 call on January 18 from juvenile justice employees who were escorting a Louisiana Juvenile Justice vehicle. The caller stated that they heard something funny and were asking for assistance from the WPSO. The occupants of the van were kicking the doors and trying to get out of the back of the van. Those occupants were juvenile prisoners who were being transported to the Jackson Parish Detention Center. At the time the call came in the van was passing Walmart in Winnfield.

The van was stopped in Dodson. JPSO was contacted and deputies arrived to escort the van to the Jackson Parish Detention Center.

The Winnfield Fire Department was dispatched on Saturday evening to a reported kitchen fire on Martin Luther King Dr. at 18:56 Hrs. Engine 1, Engine 4, and Ladder 1 responded with 9 personnel. Engine 1 arrived on scene and transmitted a second alarm after arriving on scene to a residential home with heavy smoke coming from the front side of the home. Command arrived on scene and completed a 360 and made sure the residence was clear which the owner had gotten out before the fire progressed. Crews deployed front bumper attack line off of Engine 1 for fire suppression. Crew then donned PPE and SCBAS and made an interior attack on the fire which was contained in the kitchen area near the stove. Fire fighters were able to extinguish the fire with minor damage. Crews then used a PP Fan to push all the smoke out of the residence. There were no injuries and after salvage and overhaul operations, the scene was turned back over to the owner.

A special meeting of the Winn Parish Police Jury was held on M o n d a y, January 8. The purpose of the meeting was to welcome new jury memb ers, acknowledge the work of the previous members, and also to elect a new police jury president.

Honorable Judge Anastasia Wiley was present to administer the Oath of Office to each of the following jury members: Mr. Phillip Evans – District 1, Mrs. Deionne Carpenter – District 2, Mr. Darrell Franks – District 3, Mr. Stanley Garrett – District 4, Mr. Kyle Potts – District 5, Mr. Author Robinson – District 6 and Mr. Frank McLaren – District 7.

Mr Chris Nevils also called for the nominations for a new president. The outgoing president, Mr. Josh McAllister, is the new incoming sheriff for Winn Parish.

Calvin High School Senior Beta had a very successful year at the State Beta Convention. CHS had over 15 students participate in various competitions ranging from academic tests, creative writing, visual arts, speaking, and engineering. They also had 7 students place in the top 5 and qualified to compete at Beta National Convention in June. There were other students entries as well.
