Secretary of State Nancy Landry reminds voters that the deadlines to register to vote in the March 23 Presidential Preference Primary and Municipal Primary Election are fast approaching. The deadline to register in person, by mail or at the OMV Office is Wednesday, Feb. 21. The deadline to register through the GeauxVote Online Registration System is Saturday, March 2.

This deadline is for citizens who have never registered to vote, as well as voters who would like to make changes to their registration.

The Presidential Preference Primary is a closed party primary, which means only registered Democrats and Republicans will be allowed to vote in their party’s respective primary. However, there are local elections in 24 parishes in which all voters may cast their ballots, regardless of party, if their jurisdiction is included. Voters are encouraged to check their voter registration— including party affiliation— before the registration deadlines.

The 29th Annual Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials is upon us once again with lots of excitement for everyone. The dates have been set and are as follows: March 18 – Puppy Bay/O&Y March 19 – Old & Young March 20 & 21 – One Dog March 21 & 22 – Two Dog March 23 – Two Dog Finals/Best of the Best March 24 – Youth Bay The Hog Dog Trials will run from 8am-9pm daily. On Monday, February 26 from 11:00am – 3:30pm, the WSHS Tigers will host a baseball camp for ages 6-14. The cost of the camp will be $35. For more information about this event, please contact Coaches Herron or Spangler.

More than 1,400 middle school students from throughout central Louisiana participated in second annual RECIPE for Rural STEM Day Feb. 8 where they engaged in activities and demonstrations designed to spark interest in science, technology engineering and mathematics. The RECIPE (Relevant, Educational, Career Minded, Impactful, Purposeful and Engaging) event was presented by Northwestern State University’s Region 6 STEM Center at the Alexandria Mega Shelter in collaboration with 125 education and industry partners.

“From live alligators to robots, fire trucks to underwater robots, the range of activities and exhibits provided various STEM exposure to our students,” said Jennifer DePriest, director of NSU’s STEM Center. “Participants had the opportunity to engage with hands-on demonstrations, sparking their imagination and cultivating a deeper understanding of STEM concepts.”

Rotarian of the Day and speaker of the day for Winnfield Rotary members on January 31, 2024 were one and the same, Jeff Johnson, Dean of the Huey P. Long Campus of the Central Louisiana Technical and Community College (CLTCC). Jeff is a local native and long-time educator whose mission is to help provide quality education for residents of Winn Parish and surrounding communities.

Mr. Johnson brought club members up to date on developments at CLTCC, particularly our local Huey P. Long campus. Our campus offers four programs, business and office administration with a focus on medical coding and billing, welding, nursing, and forestry technology. Student enrollment in these programs is up 10% over last year.

CLTCC has created its own nonprofit foundation called the CenLa Community Foundation through which it can receive donations directly. This avoids the red tape of donations having to be made to the state before available to CLTCC.

As I sit here on my couch all snuggled up in my blanket, my thoughts of how to start this article is going in so many directions in my mind. I certainly want to do it justice because the story of this individual is pretty remarkable. But my mind slips off in the past about 20 years ago. I am at the recreation ballpark watching our youngest son’s wee tee ball team attempt to play one of their games. As I look out at the field I watch these little fellows running around, picking flowers in the field and tackling each other as they all run for the ball. In the small crowd at the ballpark are momma’s cheering for their favorite player and daddy’s trying to get their sons attention to give out much needed advice. One player in particular, was a little blonde headed boy who was a bit bigger than everyone else coming up to bat with a very serious look on his face.

Delta Kappa Gamma is an international society for key women educators. The local chapter is Alpha Beta. Recently DKG member, Theresa Hendrix and Dianne Johnson recognized the Winn Parish Assistant Prinicipals for their outstanding service to education. A small token of gratitude was presented to these educators. Registration begins on January 10 for Winn Parish Dixie Youth. Registration is only online by going to the Winn Parish Dixie Youth facebook page.
