Jindal signs education legislation in Winnfield

Gov. Bobby Jindal appeared in Winnfield on Thursday, June 12 to sign HB 944, a bill that will strengthen the “JumpStart” program in Louisiana. Designed to provide certain job skills in educational criteria in rural and urban high  schools, JumpStart allows for a career diploma to be an equivalent to the traditional high school diploma

Driver injured in log truck accident

A Winn Parish log truck driver sustained injuries after an accident resulted in his log truck overturning while traveling 
on Highway 499. Law enforcement officials responded to an emergency call on Monday afternoon about an accident south of Sikes. Daniel Wilson of Sikes was driving his log truck when his  load shifted while taking a curve.

Victim escapes with bruises, account of sexual slavery in Natchitoches

Chains, guns, attempts to flee. Law enforcement officers struggled to describe a case of human trafficking and sexual slavery uncovered Saturday, May 31 that resulted in multiple arrests. The investigation began around 11 p.m. when Robeline Assistant Town Marshall Shelby Borders was approached by a victim dragging a 35-foot logging chain and a bucket.

Deputy recognized for 50 years of service

Summer Reading Program begins June 4

Registration has begun for the 2014 Winn Parish Library Summer Reading Program at all five library locations: Atlanta, Calvin, Dodson, Sikes and Winnfield. This free program is open to children from birth through  the fifth grade, and all activities are based on this summer’s science theme: Fizz, Boom Read.

Old City Jail Now Parking Lot

Construction has begun on the new parking lot for the Winn Parish Courthouse. Located on Highway 167 across from the building on the site of the old Winnfield City Jail, the jury hopes that this will help alleviate heavy traffic around on court days and give citizens an easier alternative to Main Street parking. A walkway will be constructed to connect the parking lot and Courthouse.
