The 1st Annual Winn Veterans Memorial Coed Tournament will take place on Saturday, August 8th, at the Winnfield Recreation Center. Organized as a community event to honor veterans, the tournament features coed teams competing in either a 7/3 or 6/4 format. Participants must be at least 18 years old to play, and the entry fee is $250 per team.

In addition to the standard team fee, home run bands are available for purchase at $15 per individual or $50 per team. Game rules dictate that the winning team of each game will provide umpires for subsequent play, and gameplay will utilize Classic or Pro M balls.

The Kiwanis Club of Winnfield welcomed Winn Parish Sheriff Josh McAllister as its guest speaker during a recent weekly luncheon meeting. Sheriff McAllister was introduced by Dr. Gaddis and provided members and guests with an in-depth update on the parish’s current law enforcement initiatives, technological upgrades, and community-focused programs.

The presentation kicked off with some good-natured banter when Sheriff McAllister joked that Dr. Gaddis was actually disappointed in him— explaining that the club had really wanted to invite Ruby Jean, the Sheriff’s Office’s newest single-purpose narcotics K-9 officer. Ruby Jean was unable to attend due to a vet checkup for minor heat dehydration after extensive training, but the Sheriff assured everyone she was recovering well and eager to get back on duty.

The Winnfield Fire Department is currently recruiting candidates to fill full-time firefighter positions. The department, established in 1908, is looking for individuals dedicated to serving the Winnfield community.

Preferred qualifications for applicants include Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification as well as Firefighter I & II certifications. Prospective candidates must be physically fit, capable of performing essential job duties, and possess a strong commitment to teamwork and community service.

The department offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes a competitive salary, health, dental, and vision insurance, and enrollment in the Louisiana State Retirement system. Additional benefits feature paid holidays, vacation time, sick leave, and opportunities for ongoing training and career advancement.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced it will host a Passport Fair at its Winnfield location. The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

The Passport Fair 2026 will be held at the USPS Winnfield facility, located at 201 S. Bevill Street in Winnfield. On the day of the event, the facility will observe special extended hours, from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM to accommodate attendees.

The event is designed to assist members of the public in obtaining new passports or renewing existing ones. Both walk-in applicants and those with prescheduled appointments are welcome.

The Winnfield Post Office stated that refreshments will be available for those attending. The event is part of an effort by the USPS to facilitate the acquisition of international travel documents for residents.

Young entrepreneurs from across the region gathered at The Spott in Jonesboro on Saturday, July 18, for the Kid Entrepreneur Market, an event held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to highlight and support youth-led small businesses.

The free community event featured a variety of products created and sold by local children, ranging from lemonade, baked goods, and handmade crafts to slime, eggs, and gift items. The initiative aimed to give local youth hands-on experience in business operations, financial management, and customer service.

Wednesday, July 22, Senior Community Liaison Matthew McKee, along with other members of the staff from the Office of Speaker Mike Johnson, visited WPFD #3 to meet with our department and discuss the needs and concerns of our community.

We sincerely appreciate Speaker Johnson, Mr. McKee, and their staff for taking the time to visit and engage with the often-overlooked rural fire departments of Central Louisiana. Open communication and strong partnerships are essential to ensuring that our communities receive the support they deserve.

The atmosphere at the Winn Council on Aging, Inc. (WCOA) was filled with excitement and cool relief this past week as local seniors gathered for a classic afternoon of bingo paired with a summer favorite: ice cream cones. Participants enjoyed a competitive game of luck before beating the June heat with a variety of sweet treats. The ice cream social is just one of many activities the WCOA coordinates to keep area seniors connected, active, and engaged. The Council has a full slate of fun planned all month and year long. Up next on the calendar is a highly anticipated day of entertainment. On Thursday, June 25, the WCOA will host popular local musician Sam Wise for live music, with a delicious lunch immediately following the morning’s regular bingo session. All area seniors are invited to come out for the music, food, and fellowship. The halls of the Winn Parish Library were filled with excitement and curiosity recently as the facility welcomed students and staff from Winnfield Primary School for a special summer learning experience.

The visit was part of an ongoing effort to promote summer literacy and connect local youth with community resources. During the tour, students had the opportunity to explore the library’s vast collection, learn about the various free programs offered throughout the year, and discover how the library operates behind the scenes.

For many of the young participants, the highlight of the day was discovering that reading is more than just a classroom assignment, it is a gateway to endless imagination. Library staff guided the students through the facility, emphasizing that every book holds the potential to take them on an amazing adventure.

The Winn Parish Police Jury tackled a packed agenda during its regular monthly meeting on Monday, June 15, passing a road construction bid, a new housing assistance program, and addressing ongoing parish infrastructure needs. In the night’s largest financial move, President Frank McLaren motioned to award the bid for the Eugene Garrett Road (South End) Capital Outlay Project. The jury voted to award the contract to Regional Construction, LLC in the amount of $599,597.50, moving the facility, planning, and control phase forward. The jury also cleared the way for local housing support by adopting a resolution to enter into an agreement with the Capital Area Finance Authority. This new partnership will provide down-payment assistance to first-time homebuyers and military veterans residing in Winn Parish.

The Winn Parish Library branches have been beaming with excitement as the 2026 Summer Reading Program, “Plant a Seed, Read,” kicks into high gear. Families and children from across the parish have been filling the libraries to explore new books, learn about nature, and enjoy some unforgettable live entertainment.

On Wednesday, June 17, the library brought the wild straight to Winn Parish. The Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo from Monroe made a highly anticipated appearance at both the Winnfield and Dodson branches.

The special hands-on event gave local children and families an up-close look at the animal kingdom. Zookeepers shared fascinating insights into the unique needs, habitats, and behaviors of various creatures, with a particular spotlight on reptiles. Attendees had the opportunity to explore, ask questions, and discover everything there is to know about the animals, blending science education perfectly with summer fun.
