The Winnfield Senior High School Cheer squad will host the Winnfield Tiger Little Girl Cheer Camp on Monday, Sept. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The camp is open to all girls from Pre-K through 6th grade.

Participants at the clinic will learn cheer and dance routines designed to foster school spirit. Registration for the camp is $40 per child. The fee covers instruction, an official T-shirt, snacks during the session, and a commemorative photograph.

Additionally, campers will have the opportunity to showcase the skills learned during the camp by performing live at the upcoming Winnfield High School football game against Jonesboro-Hodge.

The Winnfield City Council met for its regular meeting on Wednesday, August 12, in the Allen Building. The meeting opened with guest and audience participation, featuring Brandon Slayter, Post Adjutant for The American Legion Everett S. Fick Post 9. Slayter took to the podium to announce that after 45 years of inactivity, Post 9 has been officially reactivated alongside an active American Legion Auxiliary Unit and plans for a Sons of the American Legion Squadron. He emphasized that the post is dedicated to supporting all local veterans and contributing to civic programs. While searching for a permanent home, the organization meets on the third Monday of each month at 6:00 PM in the Winn Parish Courthouse downstairs meeting room.

The 1st Annual Winn Veterans Memorial Coed Tournament took place on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Winnfield Recreation Center, raising $1,000 toward the construction of the new Winn Veterans Memorial. Tournament organizer Josie Davidson created the event to honor past and present service members. A special highlight of the day was local veteran Tommy Harrell throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

“Our hearts swelled to see the younger generation vested in our veterans,” shared Shannon Chevallier following the event, thanking Davidson, the players, umpires, and community members who braved the stifling summer temperatures to support the cause. Davidson expressed deep gratitude to everyone who attended, played, and supported the effort, noting she looks forward to making it an annual tradition.

Calvin High School has been recognized by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) as a Violation Free School of Distinction for the fourth consecutive year, following the 2025–26 academic period.

Alongside the athletic association honors, the Winn Parish School District released district-wide teacher certification statistics for the 2026–2027 school year as part of its “Raising the Standard” initiative. According to the figures released by the district, 92 percent of classroom educators across Winn Parish hold state certification, representing 96 of the district’s 104 teachers.

Members at the main branch recently gathered for a creative crafting workshop, taking on a project to design and assemble custom wooden gazebo birdhouses. Participants customized their birdhouses using acrylic paints and applied patterned decorative napkins using the Mod Podge decoupage technique, ensuring each finished product featured a unique aesthetic. The hands-on session provided an opportunity for skill-building and social interaction, with participants sharing techniques throughout the assembly and decorating process. Organizers noted strong engagement during the class, resulting in a wide array of distinct, finished birdhouses that highlighted individual artistic approaches.

Members of local 4-H and FFA chapters, alongside agricultural teachers, parents, and community volunteers, recently completed a cleanup effort at the fairgrounds to prepare the facilities for upcoming events.

As summer winds down, local students and families have an exciting community event to look forward to before heading back to the classroom. Winn Main Street has announced it will be sponsoring the upcoming “Back to School Squishy Hunt,” scheduled to take place from Sunday, August 3, through Wednesday, August 6.

The four-day event promises to bring fun and community engagement to the area, inviting children and parents alike to participate in the town-wide scavenger hunt. Organizers are encouraging residents to join in on the interactive festivities as local shops and organizations open their doors to help celebrate the start of the new school year.

WINNFIELD, LA — The Winnfield Kiwanis Club held its weekly lunch meeting on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, featuring newly appointed Winnfield Middle School Principal Brent Carpenter alongside key members of the WMS Tiger football coaching staff: Head Coach Chance Williams, Defensive Coordinator Jeff Rachal, and Offensive Line Coach Justin Durbin.

Principal Carpenter, a Winn Parish native who grew up attending local public schools before graduating from Calvin High School, returns to lead Winnfield Middle School bringing 26 years of educational experience—over half of which has been spent in school administration. Having previously served 11 years as principal at WMS before spending four years as principal at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, Carpenter expressed his deep appreciation for returning home for what he envisions as his “last hoorah” in education.

The Winn Parish School Board committees convened on Monday, July 27, at the Winn Parish School Board Office meeting room to discuss facility updates, tax exemptions, policy clarifications, and personnel matters ahead of the upcoming school year.

Opening the meeting, the Maintenance and Building Committee provided a summer maintenance update. Board President Joe Lynn Browning expressed concern regarding an unfinished project in front of the Dodson High School gymnasium, emphasizing that the work must be completed before students return to classes. Additionally, committee member Michelle Carpenter inquired about the condition of Winnfield Primary School. Superintendent Troy A. Bell responded that, barring any unforeseen issues, the facility is prepared for students to begin school the following Friday.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced it will host a Passport Fair at its Winnfield location. The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

The Passport Fair 2026 will be held at the USPS Winnfield facility, located at 201 S. Bevill Street in Winnfield. On the day of the event, the facility will observe special extended hours, operating from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM to accommodate attendees.

The event is designed to assist members of the public in obtaining new passports or renewing existing ones. Both walk-in applicants and those with pre-scheduled appointments are welcome.

The Winnfield Post Office stated that refreshments will be available for those attending. The event is part of an effort by the USPS to facilitate the acquisition of international travel documents for residents.
