Kiwanis Scholarship Committee Chairman Lamar Tarver introduced Beaux Cody Vines and his parents Amy and Brett Vines to the Kiwanis Club Monday, May 18. Vines received one of two $750 scholarships given by the club this ear. Tarver told the Vines family and reminded the club that the money for the scholarships came from the Boston  Butt lunch that is held each spring. Beaux Vines scored a 29 on the ACT, had a 4.0 GPA and was one of the valedictorians in his graduating class. Vines told the club that he is planning to attend ULM with a double major in history and accounting. He would like to teach history and maybe do some accounting on the side. However, Vines also said he is going to be in the ROTC at college and is very interested in being in the army. He would like to attend West Point. He has applied but was not accepted and may reapply later. He won a scholarship to go to Normandy this summer.

Fick District 8, Unit 9 American LegionAuxiliary met on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11 :00 A.M. at Fox’sPizza for their Spring luncheon and meeting.President Bonnie Buckelew called the meeting to order andmembers were led in Pledge or Allegiance and prayer byMaxine Godman.Vice President Gayle Gilcrease read minutes of April 11,2015 meeting in absence of Secretary Barbara Poole. Minutesapproved as read.

Freemasons to confer “Vacant ChairDegree” in honor of Fallen Soldiers

Eastern Star Lodge will host a Memorial Day event at theBeville Street Lodge Hall on May 25 at 7:00 p.m. It is open tothe public, and everyone is invited.The presentation of the flags of the Armed Forces performedby the Boy Scouts of Troop 190 will be made to the rousingmusic of the Fight Songs of each of the Branches of Service.Flags of the United States which have been worn and tatteredwill be presented to the Boy Scouts for proper respectful dis-posal.

Forestry BMP Workshop held in Winnfield

On May 1, Trailblazer Resource, Conservation, and Development and partners hosted a Forestry Best Management Practice (BMP) Workshop at the (new) Winn Parish Library in Winnfield, La. More than 50 foresters, loggers and landowners were in attendance. Speakers included NRCS State Forester Rick Williams who discussed the details of forestry “best management practices” and NRCS District Conservationist Glenn Austin who discussed cost sharing programs to assist landowners in applying BMP’s. Ben Holten, Biologist, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, discussed the positive impacts of Forestry BMP’s on wildlife. David Campbell, Forestry Program Director, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, discussed forest management programs available from the state.

Out of the Past: Winn Parish Library

Staff Historians found this account of the history of Winn parish library which was published in the December 5, 1940 issue of our newspaper. “HISTORY OF WINN PARISH LIBRARY” The Winn Parish public library began to walk by itself for the first time July 1, 1940. It ceased at that time to be a demonstration library, supported and supervised by the state and became a parish controlled institution. When the first book issued under the new arrangement the library passed from the state of infancy to maturity, thereby having proved its usefulness to the people which it had served.

Winnfield Kiwanis Club Hears from Troy Rogers at Recent Meeting

Troy Rogers, Winn ParishFire District 3 Chief andKiwanian spoke to theKiwanis club Monday, April27thabout his model train col-lection and trains in general.He has a long history of lov-ing trains. When he was achild he would ride from hishome on Bernstein St. to thedepot to see the trains. Finallyhe was allowed to even ridesome. When he got his firstjob running a paper route hesaved his money to buy modeltrains. That first collectionwas eventually sold but hebegan to collect again later.
