Judge Anastasia Wiley introduced the Ironhead Youth Development program to the Kiwanis Club Monday, April 15 th . This is a children and youth mentorship program. The program was started by LJ Taylor in Jena in 2016 and in Winnfield in 2017. Mr. Taylor is employed at the Federal Prison in Pollock. They have done a couple of programs at the City Court which is how they came to Judge Wiley’s attention.

The program is non-profit and is for at risk kids (anything at school) and an outlet for parents. These are kids who are victims of their circumstances. This program encourages youth to be the best person they can.

The Central Louisiana Technical Community College (CLTCC) Huey P. Long Campus Forest Technology program is pleased to welcome Drax Biomass as an industry partner. The program is celebrating its one-year anniversary and recognizing Jay Evans, procurement site manager for LaSalle Bioenergy (Drax Biomass), for his assistance developing the Forest Technology Program. Evans is a member of the Forest Technology Occupational Advisory Committee which consists of industry leaders that guide the program toward producing students capable of performing jobs that industry needs.

The Winn Parish LSU AgCenter will be hosting a “Lunch and Learn” on April 24, 2019. This event will be held at the Winn Parish LSU AgCenter Office located on 119 W. Main St., Ste.4.

Winnfield Primary School employees posed with Weyerhaeuser representatives Friday, March 1st, to commemorate Weyerhaeuser’s generosity. Kim Williams, Margaret Reed, and Susie Miller applied for the grant to support additional technology for WPS classrooms. Weyerhaeuser graciously accepted the application and provided $17,000.00 in funding from the Weyerhaeuser Southern Timberlands Giving Fund.

For the Rotary Program to sum up the last of February, Rotarian Don Kelley had the program for the week. He invited Kate Nevils, daughter of District Attorney Chris Nevils, to speak to the Rotarians. Kate expressed her appreciation for the invitation to be apart of the meeting. She told about her upcoming event with the Miss Louisiana Outstanding Teen Competition that will be help in Monroe, Louisiana. Kate was recently crowned Miss Dixie Gem Peach out of Ruston, Louisiana.

North Louisiana Isshinryu Karate at 609 East Main Street of Winnfield held it’s 10th annual kick a thon for Special Olympics in January of 2019. The Kick a thon is part of the “GIVE BACK” emphasis of the karate school that is in connection with its motto “training for a better tomorrow”.

Owner and master instructor Donald Rudd (7th degree black belt) teaches that if a karate student improves oneself and then helps oth- ers to improve themselves it can assist in strengthening community which leads to a “better tomorrow”.

Montgomery Junior High is proud to announce Gracie Smith as 2019 Student of the Year. She was also selected as the Grant Parish Eighth Grade Student of the Year. Gracie will soon be competing at the regional level amongst students from fourteen other surrounding parishes in our region.

Gracie is the daughter of Lisa & Richard DeLong of the Dartigo community and Jake & Haylee Smith of Winnfield. She is the granddaughter of Ronnie & Barbara Lasyone and Wayne & Brenda Smith; great granddaughter of Mrs. Katherine Grantadams. We are very proud to have Gracie represent Montgomery Junior High School as well as Grant Parish and want to wish her good luck as she progresses on to regionals.

Winn Parish is a loving, caring, giving community, Jodi Taylor suggested to Winnfield Rotarians at their February 6 lunch. However, we have a larger problem with child neglect and abuse than we realize or care to admit.

Mrs. Taylor is the CASA Coordinator for the local office of Children’s Advocacy Network (CAN). She explained that the organization’s mission is to help heal and champion abused and neglected children throughout Central Louisiana. The agency currently consist of three programs, which are The Children’s Advocacy Center, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

The CASA volunteer acts as the eyes and ears of the court, making independent, objective recommendations regarding the child’s best interest with the goal of each child being placed in a safe, permanent home.
