Louisiana Declared the Most ProLife State In Nation

Article Image Alt Text

NEW ORLEANS – On January 23, 2020, the national pro-life policy organization Americans United for Life (AUL) announced that Louisiana is the most pro-life state in America. AUL released its 2020 “Defending Life” report after analyzing progress made legislatively or in litigation in 2019. The annual report contains its annual “Life List” ranking all 50 states based on each state’s body of law associated with the life issues, ranging from abortion to euthanasia. AUL’s decision to place Louisiana at the top of the list was based on the strong Louisiana pro-life legislation passed in 2019, Louisiana’s role in the upcoming June Medical Services v. Gee Supreme Court case, the presence of the Love Life Constitutional Amendment on the 2020 ballot, and the continued bipartisan commitment to the pro-life cause.

Kim Nation speaks to Kiwanis Club

Deano Thornton received his Legion of Honor Award for 25 years of service in the Winnfield Kiwanis Club presented by President Shonna Moss at the January 27, 2020 Kiwanis club meeting.

Kim Nation speaks to Kiwanis Club

Kim Nation from the Baby Safe Sleep Alliance of Winn Parish spoke to the Kiwanis club Monday, January 27, 2020. The infant mortality rate is at an all time high in Louisiana for the years 2015-17. In 2018 there were 7.82 deaths per 1000 live births. There are 9 regions in Louisiana and we are in region 6 which had 8.93 deaths per 1000 live births. This was the fifth highest so this region is in the middle. They would like the number to be 6 deaths per 1000 live births or lower.

SIDS is sudden infant death syndrome. There is no obvious reason for the death and it is recorded as SIDS on the death certificate. SUIDS is sudden unexpected infant death and is usually due to asphyxiation or suffocation. The leading cause is unsafe sleep. Where does the baby sleep? A rock and play is unsafe for sleep. Nation passed around personal pictures showing unsafe ways for babies to sleep. Suffocation is the leading cause of death in Louisiana.

The new News Editor for the Winn Parish Enterprise, Tiffany Burke, spoke to the Kiwanis After Hours meeting, Monday, January 20, 2020. She graduated from Calvin in 2011 and graduated from Northwestern with a degree in Education. It was a logical choice and scholarships were available. She taught at Winnfield Senior High and Calvin for a few years. Then she went on a mission trip to New York and after her second mission trip she quit her teaching job. She has been on mission trips to New York, Brazil, Hawaii, Nepal, France and California. She started at the Enterprise on Halloween day. She originally called to apply for the sales job and ended up with the news editor job.

Ms. Burke is all about making a difference in your world. She believes you have to transfer your passion to make a difference. There are a lot of civic clubs in our town and they are about making a difference. She said authenticity sells.
