When You Come to a Knife in the Road

Article Image Alt Text

Diet and Exercise. Diet and Exercise. This has been the mantra of the wellness sector for years. Better to stay well through self discipline than to battle any illness resultant from being a couch potato who eats too much pizza and donuts.

I’ve got a friend who has been walking on a regular basis for years. He told me his exercise routine was not so much for right now (he was about 40 at the time) but for when he gets to be 80. He doesn’t want to lack the mobility he saw in his father.

I thought this was a great idea but didn’t get around to it until a couple of years ago, inspired by Diane who had begun walking with a friend. I mapped out a route up and down the hills of our neighborhood, through the parking lot of the old Autumn Leaves and back to the house. One mile. We’d walk it twice on nice days.

~ Letter to Editor ~

Dear Editor,

The dedication of all prayer warriors is needed to spread the word about some VERY important events that are taking place for the pro-life movement in just a few days. The Justice Foundation of America, which works tirelessly to help women and stop the harm of abortion, is asking YOU, the people of God, to rise up through prayer and through action.

There is hope.

Will you pray with us now? Please pray for the reversal of Roe v. Wade and the Court’s other abortion cases. Please pray that the 4,660 testimonies of Women Injured by Abortion, including Norma McCorvey (the former “Roe” of Roe v. Wade) and Sandra Cano (the former “Doe” of Doe v. Bolton, the companion case to Roe) – who both came to publicly oppose abortion – will be read and “heard” by the Court.

Letter to the Editor

The purpose for this notification is to make the many Christ loving men and women of Winn, Jackson and surrounding parishes aware of a real need and truly just cause, in our community. My lifelong home (Winn), is in decline and has been for many years. It’s clear for anyone to see. Our greatest resource, our children, have had to leave here in search of meaningful employment. We are losing many of our best and brightest and most talented young people to other cities because of the opportunity that exists in those places, and this fact is not likely to change. As a parent and grandparent I am proud and glad that our loved ones can move to better places to raise our future generations. It saddens me though, that many of our local citizens don’t live within short driving distances of their loved ones and only get to communicate by phone or electronically. But back to my point, crime, drugs, and lawlessness is on the rise. Our moral society is at risk.

Choosing Between Homelessness and Abuse

By Stacey Rachel

It’s estimated that 1 in 4 women in the U.S. will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. While the public often wonders why women don’t leave abusive partners, the answer can often be as simple as “And where would they go?” Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among families nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“Families that become homeless due to domestic violence often face challenges that other homeless populations may not have to confront,” said Trena Pruitt, DART’s Shelter Manager. “They may require critical safety measures, such as a confidential location, and it’s likely they will need trauma support. There is also the unfortunate reality that people sometimes stay with an abuser because they don’t have access to the money they need to get them into a safer situation.”

Tyrades! by Danny Tyree

By Tom Smith

They’ll do it every time. Whenever Joe Sixpack (or Joe’s congressman) gingerly raises the subject of hiring extra border guards, tweaking our broken system of monitoring work visas or fine-tuning our vetting of refugees from terrorist-infested countries, the cliche© knee-jerk responses are swift. Copycat editorial cartoonists, sanctimonious talk-show hosts and professional agitators bombard us with caricatures of an immigrant-loathing Statue of Liberty and parodies of Emma Lazarus’s 1883 sonnet “The New Colossus” (“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses…”). Joe and his ilk are savagely branded as haters and xenophobes and violators of sacred promises.

But “The New Colossus” is not a covenant Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. It is not an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, a landmark Supreme Court ruling, an executive order, a treaty, a trade pact or even a local zoning ordinance.

“Life’s Greatest Foundational Truth”

By Tom Smith

It’s the one on which everything else depends. Life’s greatest foundational Truth. In some ways I’ve always been interested in knowing what makes things (and people) tick. Not in a mechanical way—for I still remember tearing apart a small motor in my dad’s shop, not being able to put it back together and getting in trouble! No, my search for real, irrefutable, verifiable

Truth began at an early age. And, thankfully, even though quite young, I found that upon which everything hinges and what a difference it’s made in my life. “What might that be?” asks one in curiosity

“2017 Ruminations”

by Tom Smith

Well, here we are again. At the end of another year. Another 12 calendar pages torn off and a new calendar put in its place. That’s why it’s important that we spend some time “ruminating” over the past 365 days, remembering both the “good” and the “bad.”

Why is that?

Simply because it gives us an opportunity to give thanks to the Lord for His blessings. It also (hopefully) helps us learn from our mistakes because, as someone said,

“History has a way of repeating itself.”

How The Legislature Got From There To Here

By Jeremy Alford

Many lawmakers entered the Memorial Day weekend not thinking about backyard barbecues or dreaming about seaside resorts. Thoughts instead gravitated towards one question: “What in the hell is going on?”

With the regular session scheduled to end soon, as in next week, they weren’t the only ones. Others tracking the process — and even those ignoring it — would have been satisfied just to learn exactly how the Legislature got here, this place where important bills are somehow stalled in legislative purgatory and a complete meltdown is a likelihood.

Well, those with keen eyes received their first glimpse into the darkness of impasse on May 4, 2017. That’s when the Louisiana House of Representatives approved a skinny state budget without the meaty tax increases sought by the Governor’s Office and Senate leadership.

Summer Safety: Driver Distraction by Cell Phones and Texting, Part II

By Terry Driskill, MA, MA Licensed Professional Counselor

Yes! Everyone is guilty of talking on our cell phone or texting while driving. I do talk on my cell phone while driving but I do not even attempt to text while driving. If you recall from last week’s article the topic was defining the three types of distraction. In this week’s article the discussion will be violation of the law and the consequences.

Kim Davis, marriage licenses and down the road

By Glenn Mollette

If you take a job for the government then you should abide by the rules of the job. If you don't agree with the rules then you should resign. When the government as in Kim Davis' case makes allowances for her to exercise her religious convictions then that "seems" to be a good thing.
