On The Bright Side

On The Bright Side

One of my sons forgot his lunch the other day, and since he rarely forgets anything, I decided to bring it to the school.

I donned my mask and walked to the appropriate door of the high school.

They wouldn’t let me in nor accept the lunch “because of the pandemic.”

I turned and walked back to my car, called my son, and told him to just walk out to the parking lot and retrieve his lunch when the lunch bell rings.

I figured, perhaps the school didn’t mind a student coming outside to grab his lunch in a pinch, but that they were just technically not allowed to open the doors to an outsider or accept the lunch themselves to deliver to him.

Pilgrim Reflections

Just call me “old school.”

Yes, you can call me that or “out-of-touch”. . .or “ultra-conservative”. . .or some kind of “phobic” about this-or-that because I don’t like what’s happening in America.

But, that’s okay: for, at the end of the day, I’m still an American through-and-through who still believes we should say “One nation under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance—with our hand over our hearts or saluting if a military member.

Believe it or not, I sometimes still get goosebumps when I hear or sing the Star-Spangled Banner. . .or hear Taps playing. . .or hear a 21-gun salute at the funeral of a veteran.

Letter to the Editor GOAT as Mayor

Sent in by Linda Hall of Dodson

The year 2020 was a tough year in so many ways. Hurricanes and power outages. Seems the list is long. We pray 2021 be better, yet the signs do look bleaks. I know this personally too.

Here in Dodson, we have a bright spot. He truly does not know it and never dare to admit it. He is our mayor Ritchie Broomfield. I have never faced a problem big or small he could not solve and did it. Not a list to do – he knows.

As a widow – I forgot how to start the generator. I called Ritchie on how to do it. In less than five minutes he and his helper was at my door. He must have a battery like an Energizer cause he goes and works.

Plue he truly loves our town! Cause it sure shows by his actions. I guess he works 80 hours a week. I never heard him complain. Safe to say 98 percent folks here love and respect him. It would be hard not to.

Don Fritz

Don Fritz

Don Fritz, 82 years of age, Winnfield, LA died on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at Rapids Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, LA. He was born February 25, 1938 in Adams, Nebraska to the late Homer and Nora Fritz. His career encompassed serving 20 years in the Air Force, working in a VA Hospital, being Director in the National Cemetery System, and finishing up with working in Funeral Homes as an attendant. He was serious about serving others.

Midwestern values were instilled in him at a young age and they carried him through his entire life. He was hard-working, dependable, reliable, and supportive to those who needed him. Always.

Don was a life-long Cornhusker fan watching the games whenever he could.

He was an amazing story-teller – entertaining others in detail about events from throughout his life experiences.

It’s Okay to Ask, “How Long, O Lord?”

When the COVID-19 virus first hit the headlines, it seemed we didn’t know what to think. Once we were bombarded with headlines and mandates, we were afraid to think about what we were afraid of. Now that many places are opening up, there is still a lot of uncertainty, and we don’t know what to think. We had hoped this situation would go away in a short time, but one constant theme throughout this pandemic has been, “How long?” How long will it last? How long must we wear masks? How long will businesses be closed? How long before a vaccine is found? The longer we wait, the more plaintive our “How longs” get.

How Labor Day Was Established

How Labor Day Was Established

To many Americans, Labor Day marks the end of the summer, a day off from work and school, and one last chance to relax. But Labor Day is much more than just a day off. It represents a very important victory for laborers everywhere. The holiday is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.

When You Come to a Knife in the Road

Article Image Alt Text

Diet and Exercise. Diet and Exercise. This has been the mantra of the wellness sector for years. Better to stay well through self discipline than to battle any illness resultant from being a couch potato who eats too much pizza and donuts.

I’ve got a friend who has been walking on a regular basis for years. He told me his exercise routine was not so much for right now (he was about 40 at the time) but for when he gets to be 80. He doesn’t want to lack the mobility he saw in his father.

I thought this was a great idea but didn’t get around to it until a couple of years ago, inspired by Diane who had begun walking with a friend. I mapped out a route up and down the hills of our neighborhood, through the parking lot of the old Autumn Leaves and back to the house. One mile. We’d walk it twice on nice days.

~ Letter to Editor ~

Dear Editor,

The dedication of all prayer warriors is needed to spread the word about some VERY important events that are taking place for the pro-life movement in just a few days. The Justice Foundation of America, which works tirelessly to help women and stop the harm of abortion, is asking YOU, the people of God, to rise up through prayer and through action.

There is hope.

Will you pray with us now? Please pray for the reversal of Roe v. Wade and the Court’s other abortion cases. Please pray that the 4,660 testimonies of Women Injured by Abortion, including Norma McCorvey (the former “Roe” of Roe v. Wade) and Sandra Cano (the former “Doe” of Doe v. Bolton, the companion case to Roe) – who both came to publicly oppose abortion – will be read and “heard” by the Court.
